"The Closers" by Michael Connelly

In The Closers by Michael Connelly, Detective Harry Bosch walked away three years ago, but now is back.  He is working on a cold case that is 17 years old.  Can he get the murderer?  This was a good book.  It has a good storyline with action that kept me turning pages.  (Gerard's review, 5 stars)

"Where the Dead Sleep" by Joshua Moehling (#2)

In Where the Dead Sleep by Joshua Moehling, Packard is the law in this small town.  Not that he wants to be, but somebody has to do it.  Now a murder takes place and he has to figure out who did it and why.  There is no shortage of people who could have done it; but one thing is certain.  Whoever did it wants it to stay unsolved.  This has good action and kept me turning pages.  There is a cliff-hanger ending though, but there will be a next book.  (Gerard's review, 5 stars)

"ANNA" by Matthew Blake

In ANNA by Matthew Blake, Anna Ogily is a budding writer.  One night while asleep, she stabs to death two people!  How can this be?  Dr. Benedict Prince is an expert in sleep-related homicides.  It will be up to him to figure all this out.  This book is wild, but in a good way!  It has a great storyline that kept me turning pages quickly.  I tried to figure it out, but was all wrong.  The last 100 pages or so will leave you breathless!  This is a must read--do not miss this one!  (Gerard's review, 5++ stars)

"Lion & Lamb" by James Patterson and Duane Swierczynski

In Lion & Lamb by James Patterson, a star football quarterback is found shot and killed in his car the day before the big playoff game.  It is up to Detectives Cooper Lamb and Veena Lion to find out who did it.  This book is pretty good.  I liked the storyline, lots of action and some humor.  (Gerard's review, 4 stars)

"The Housemaid's Secret" by Freida McFadden

The Housemaid's Secret by Freida McFadden is a good mystery with twists and a great ending!  I enjoyed this book and liked the short chapters that flew by.  It's about a housekeeper who gets mixed up in trying to help a woman escape from her abusive husband, but finds out what she thought was all wrong.  This book is filled with deceit, relationships, and vengeance.  At one point, nothing made sense but as I kept on reading, it all became clear.    (Karen's review, 5 stars)

Gerard's review 1/5/24:
In The Housemaid's Secret by Frieda McFadden, Millie needs a job in the worst way.  When a very rich man offers her a job as a housekeeper, she takes it.  The only thing is that she cannot open the door of the room that his wife is in.  Will she open that door?  What would she find?  Millie has secrets of her own that better not get out.  This book is really, really good with a fantastic storyline!  It kept me turning pages right to the end.  Must read this one!  I loved it!  What a great book to start off the new year.  (5++ stars)

"Zero Days" by Ruth Ware

Ruth ware is always good, and Zero Days is no exception.  Jack and Gabe are a good team.  When a routine assignment goes wrong, Jack comes home to find her husband, Gabe, dead.  She vows to find out who killed Gabe.  The cops think it was her!  This has a good storyline and the action kept me turning pages with a surprise ending!  (Gerard's review, 5 stars)

"The Wager ( A tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder) by David Grann

I always enjoy non-fiction books about historical events.  The Wager by David Grann is one of those!  It tells the story of men who were on a secret mission at sea and survived being marooned and winding up on a deserted island where they just about starved to death.  Six months after they came back, three men came home on a makeshift raft and told a different tale.  This was good stuff that I enjoyed reading!  (Gerard's review, 5 stars)

"The Wife Upstairs" by Rachel Hawkins Is One We Both Liked

In The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins, Jane is trying to make her life better so she takes a job as a dog walker in a rich neighborhood.  By chance she meets Eddie who is rich, charming and good looking.  Things are looking up for Jane and when they decide to get married, Jane is on Easy Street, or is she?  This is a wild read with a good storyline that kept me interested.  The characters were good too with a make-up-your-own ending.  (Gerard's review, 4 stars)

Karen's review 2/22/23:
The Wife Upstairs
by Rachel Hawkins is a strange murder mystery/romance.  Jane, a broke dog walker with wealthy clients steals from them and falls for Eddie, a rich widower who expresses interest in her as well.  His wife was presumed dead but he has his wife stashed away in an upstairs hidden panic room!  Jane works to be accepted by the bored housewives in the neighborhood and finally is once she gets engaged to Eddie.

This one is a crazy read, with a strange storyline and deceptive characters.  I enjoyed this book because it had an unusual storyline that kept my interest with no idea how it would end.  The people were pretty creepy.  As usual with these mysteries, the police don't do a very good job.  This book did make me want to keep reading and get back to it.  The only thing I didn't care for was the ending--I would have liked some more details.  (4 stars)

"All Good People Here" by Ashley Flowers Does Not Live up to the Hype

In All Good People Here by Ashley Flowers, Margot goes back to her home town.  It has been 20 years since a young girl was found killed there and now it has happened again.  Was it the same person both times who did the killing and if so, why?  Margot's job depends on her getting answers.  Somebody wants her to leave it alone, or else!  This book needed more action.  It did pick up at the end at least.  I liked the storyline, but the characters were just so-so.  I don't get what all the hype was about for this one.  (Gerard's review, 4 stars)

"The IT GIRL" by Ruth Ware is Fantastic!

In The IT GIRL by Ruth Ware, Hannah is a girl from a small town who is a hard worker and finds herself at Oxford College.  Her roommate is April, who is different from Hannah in every way.  They become close friends.  Hannah finds April dead in her bed and wonders why and who would do that.  This book is fantastic with good writing, storyline and characters.  LOVED IT!  (Gerard's review, 5++ stars)

"The Woman in the Library" by Sulari Gentill

In The Woman in the Library by Sulari Gentill, there is a scream in the library.  Four people sit at a table and talk about it.  Three of the four do not realize the murder is sitting at their table with them!  I thought this book was very good.  I enjoyed the characters and the unusual story line.  Although the book started slow, it made up for it as it went along and I didn't figure out who the murderer was until the last page.  (Gerard's review, 5 stars)

"I'll Never Tell" by Catherine McKenzie

In I'll Never Tell by Catherine McKenzie, five children from the same family are all grown up.  It has been 20 years since a young girl was found dead at a camp run by the family.  Their parents are both dead, but before the children can do anything with the camp and the land it is on, they must solve who killed that girl.

I enjoyed this book very much because of the good story line and characters.  It kept my interest all the way through.  (Gerard's review, 5+ stars)

"A Slow Fire Burning" by Paula Hawkins is a Murder Mystery

In A Slow fire Burning by Paula Hawkins, a young man is found dead on a houseboat and Laura, Carla and Miriam are the suspects.  I enjoyed all three of the main characters.  It has a good storyline and the last 100 or so pages were the best!  (Gerard's review, 5 stars)

"Girl in Snow" by Danya Kukafka

In Girl in Snow by Danya Kukafka, a young teen girl is found murdered in a small town.  This novel is told by three people.  Cameron, a young boy who people say was stalking the girl; Jade, a girl who went to the same high school and interacted with the victim; and Russ, a cop who is looking for the killer.  I thought this book was good!  It had good flow and the characters were interesting to say the least.  (Gerard's review, 5 stars)

"Right Behind Her" by Melinda Leigh

In Right Behind Her by Melinda Leigh, Sheriff Bree Taggert is looking for closure.  It has been years since her parents were killed, but her dad is the main suspect in this murder-suicide.  This is an investigation of a cold case and Bree searches for the truth in this cold case.  Did her dad really do it?  This book was just okay.  It needed more action throughout, not just at the end which made for a good ending.  (Gerard's review, 4 stars)

We Both Loved "The Overnight Guest" by Heather Gudenkauf

Wow!  The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf is action packed from beginning to end!  True crime writer, Wylie Lark, finds a farmhouse out in the woods where she can finish her new book in peace and quiet, so she thinks.  When she finds a child buried in the snow near her farmhouse, she has her hands full!

I Loved this book because it had non-stop action and the characters were true to life.  It was really good!  I highly recommend it!  (Gerard's review 3/29/22, 5++ stars)

Karen's review:
I agree with my husband's review on The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf.  Although I was confused and a bit frustrated with the first half of the book because three story lines were going on at once, I stuck with it and am glad I did.  The three story lines are:  (1) Wylie returning home to write a true-crime novel about her life and finding a child and a woman out in a blizzard who she helps, (2) Josie, a girl who lives with her grandparents after her family is murdered, and (3) a woman and child who are held captive in a basement for years.   I actually felt like reading all the chapters that were dated August 2000 first and then going back to read the ones from the present.  I was relieved when I finally reached the point where everything was connected and it made sense.  This is a murder mystery full of action.  There are even discussion questions in the back for book clubs to use.  (5 stars)

"The Club" by Ellery Lloyd

In The Club by Ellery Lloyd, there is a huge party on Home Isle.  If you are rich or famous, you are invited.  When people start to be killed, something is going on but what is it and who is doing it?  This book is told by a wide variety of people.  I did not really care about any of the main characters so was not affected by them being killed off.  The storyline was good by the ending was just okay.  This book needed more action in my opinion.  (Gerard's review, 3.5 stars)

"The Night Shift" by Alex Finlay

In The Night Shift by Alex Finlay, two crimes take place 15 years apart.  Three teenagers are killed but one is able to survive.  This has a good story line that kept me turning pages.  The characters were okay, but I would have liked a bit more action.  (Gerard's review, 4 stars)

"Crime Scene Connection" by Deena Alexander

Crime Scene Connection
by Deena Alexander is about Addison who witnessed her mother's murder as a 3-yr-old hiding in a kitchen cabinet.  She wrote a murder mystery and now is trying to figure out who is doing real murders based on those in her book before other get killed, including herself!  She thinks it might be her ex-husband who is a dirty cop and who was abusive to her.  Jace, Addison's ex-husband's ex-partner, and his dog, Phoenix, try to protect Addison and in the process fall in love.  Although the romance part between Jace and Addison was predictable, I was surprised at who the killer was.

This was a pretty good murder mystery with the personal journey of Addison and Jace learning to forgive and being drawn to each other.  It has suspense, mystery and romance all wrapped up together.  (Karen's review, 4 stars)

"Apples Never Fall" by Liane Moriarty

In Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty, Stan and Joy have had 50 years of married life.  One night, a young girl shows up at their front door.  She needs help and the couple take her in and invite her to stay for a while.  That turns out to be longer than they thought it would be.  Then one day Joy and the girl, Savannah, are gone!  They do not answer phone calls.  Where did they go and why?

This book goes back and forth in time.  I had no problem with that though some people (my wife for one) do.  It's a good storyline and very interesting characters.  (Gerard's review, 5+ stars)
