"Fourth Wing" (the Empyrian #1) by Rebecca Yarros

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros got my attention right from the start and kept it all the way to the end!  What a fantastic read if you like fantasy with dragons mixed with relationships.  Violet is a great character, the youngest in her family who finds herself in war college for dragon riders when she had her heart set on being scribe like her father.  Her mother, the commanding general, ordered her to go in the dragon rider quadrant against her wishes.  This book is all about her first year at the war college.  Violet is small, weak, doesn't want to fight but is also smart and clever.

I loved this book because of the characters, the action, and the dragons.  Violet is an underdog who tries to overcome her weaknesses and beat the odds stacked against her.  She soon finds a target on her back because of who her mother is.  Violet is so nice and vulnerable that it was easy to root for her.  At some points, I cheered out loud and laughed out loud.  It had a lot of humor too!  I really enjoyed the connection with the dragons and Xaden is awesome!  So glad I can jump right into the second book in this series.  (Karen's review, 5 stars)

Gerard's review:
In Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros, Violet wants to be a scribe, but her mom has other plans for her and is running the show.  Consequently, Violet goes to school to be a dragon rider and help defend her country.  Her sister and friends tell her not to do this.  Violet goes anyway because she does not want to live with wondering what if she had made it.

This book is very good from early on.  It has a great storyline and plenty of action.  I'll have to wait a few months for book 2, but looking forward to it!  (5++ stars)

"One Perfect Couple" by Ruth Ware

In One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware, Nico and Lyla are a couple.  Nico wants to make it big on TV and being on a reality TV show could do that.  Lyla does not want to go, but for Nico's sake, she does.  Little does she know what she is in for.

Ruth Ware's books are always good including this one!  It has good action that kept me turning pages quickly along with a good storyline and characters I cared about.  (Gerard's review, 5 stars)

"19th Christmas" by James Patterson

In 19th Christmas by James Patterson, a very bad man has a deadly surprise for Christmas morning.  Everyone knows that!  What they do not know is where.  The storyline was good; however, the ending was not what I expected.  I thought it was an okay read.  (Gerard's review, 4 stars)

"The Housemaid is Watching" by Freida McFadden

In The Housemaid is Watching, by Freida McFadden, Millie and her husband work hard for what they have.  Finally, she, her two kids and her husband move into a decent size house in a very nice neighborhood.  Her dream has come true!  Little does she know that it will turn into a nightmare she could not have imagined.  Like The Teacher, this is very good!  It has a good storyline and I did not know what was coming next.  It moves along quickly with a great ending!  (Gerard's review, 5++ stars)

"The Jailhouse Lawyer" and "Power of Attorney" by James Patterson and Nancy Allen are Both Very Good!

Wow, what a great read The Jailhouse Lawyer by James Patterson and Nancy Allen is!  This is about Martha Foster, single mom of 5-yr.-old who needs medicine for a heart condition.  She is an attorney who left her firm in search of a job with better benefits for her son which led her to the public defender position in Douglas County, Alabama.  This is where her nightmare begins!  She is welcomed with open arms and has a furnished rental home.  She soon hears that the former public defender committed suicide and soon can see why!  The judge is evil and corruption flourishes in his court.  Martha fights for her life and decides to try to get the judge removed from office.  I enjoyed this book very much and was pulling for Martha all the way!  I had a hard time putting this one down, but it is a good one for reading small bits at a time since the chapters are very short so go quickly.  If you enjoy lawyer thrillers, I highly recommend this one.  It reminded me of The Intern.  (Karen's review, 5 stars)

The second story in this book is Power of Attorney which was also good.  A Chicago attorney goes back to her home in Arkansas to help her mom care for her dad, also an attorney who has Dementia, and tie up his cases.  What she thought would be a simple probate case turned into a murder trial with her client being the defendant!  This kept my attention and didn't guess who the murderer was until the end.  This not only about murder, but also arson, abuse and human trafficking.  I enjoyed the trial very much.  (Karen's review, 5 stars)
