A Bible Reading Challenge For You

 I just discovered this morning that Mom's Toolbox:  Tools For Real Moms Growing In Christ is starting a blogger Bible reading challenge to read the Bible through in 90 days.  It just started yesterday so hurry over there to sign up. 


I read the Holy Bible through once.  It's a wonderful book that can really make a huge difference in your life if you accept it as God's Holy Word and ask God to show you the truth and speak to your heart as you read it.  It is not a text book and should not be read as one.  It is inspired by God.  It is like no other book broken down into two main parts:  The Old Testament (the time before Jesus came to earth--the old covenant between God and man) and the New Testament (the time about Jesus life on earth and the acts of his disciples and his teachings--The New Covenant between God and man.)  The entire Bible is broken down into 66 books with chapter and verse references. 


There is something for everyone in the Bible.  Basic major groupings of the books by category include:



Books of the Law (aka Books of Moses), history, poetry, major prophets (major because they are longer), minor prophets (minor because they are shorter, not less important), gospels, church history, Letters by Paul, other letters, prophecy.
Gerard and I both love this book because it is life changing and thought provoking.  It is truly unique, like no other!  We highly recommend it!

"Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini

Kite Runner is a good book about Family in Afghanistan and how the Russians took over and then the Taliban and how things changed. It focused on one family and the secrets. It's about friendship and betrayal and forgiveness and redemption. Quite a book. Hard to put it down.  I had no idea what life in Afghanistan was like until I read this.

I heard a lot about this book and was anxious and excited to read it. I found it to have way too much talking and not enough action for me. I gave this book a lot of chances and stuck with it when I felt like giving up on it, but it just never did it for me. The first 100 pages or so are okay, but then I became confused and bored. I never felt any connection to the characters at all.

"The Dog Who Had Kittens" by Polly Robertus

The Dog Who Had Kittens (Live Oak Readalong)The Dog Who Had Kittens by Polly Robertus is a charming little book for children about a dog, Baxter, who lived with a cat named Eloise that had kittens.  The dog felt ignored at first but when everyone was gone, sneaked in to see the kittens and liked them!  They got along great.  I loved that the dog became “the kittens’ playground.”  It has a happy ending but I do not want to give it away.  It is a fun, quick read and the illustrations are cute as well.  I think any child with pets would enjoy this book.

The Dog Who Had Kittens is a book about Baxter, a Basset hound, who befriends a group of kittens that Eloise the cat had.  It is a really good story and the pictures are spectacular!  Pick it up if you see it.  It will make you smile and that is a good thing!

"The Coldest Winter: America and the Korean War" by David Halberstam

I did not know that much about the Korean war until I read The Coldest Winter:  America and the Korean War. I do know this book covers it ALL! I especially enjoyed the battle scenes because he gave the reader both sides of the battle. I can see why it took ten years to write. I felt like I lost a good friend when David passed on. Great job, Mr. Halberstam. Rest in peace.

"The Candy Bombers" by Andrei Cherny

It’s been too many years to count since I took a history class.  I knew of the Berlin Airlift but not really the whole story.  I know it now after reading The Candy Bombers by Andrei Cherny!  Don’t let the 550 pages scare you off.  It reads quick and for sure it is not boring.  Mr. Cherny tells the story as it happened and it’s a fascinating one of how America and Russia totally wiped out Berlin and then not so long after were at odds and we came to the people of Berlin’s aid.  A tremendous amount of research went into this book and it shows.  I really enjoyed this book and learning more about the history of our great country.  Job well done, Mr. Cherny, thank you!

You caught my attention, I will have to look for a good read. I am a history buff any way. Is this only available in the book stores or will the library have a copy?
