"On Tall Pine Lake" by Dorothy Garlock

On Tall Pine Lake by Dorothy Garlock is quite an action-packed adventure for Nona Conrad and her sister, Maggie, and good friend Mabel that takes place at a fishing campgrounds in Arkansas.  This is a fast-paced novel involving criminal activity that the reader is let in on as well as some the reader is left to figure out.  There is suspense, some mystery and some romance in the novel.  It is a quick read because it keeps your interest with all the action in it that makes you eager to see what will happen next.  As Nona had a hard time deciding who she should trust, so does the reader.  The theme is basically that some people will do just about anything for money.

"Skipping Christmas" by John Grisham

Skipping Christmas by John Grisham is about a modern day scrooge that wanted to skip everything to do with Christmas except the church stuff but wound up doing everything the last minute to please his daughter who came home unexpectedly with a fiancĂ©.  This is a quick light read.

"White Chocolate Moments" by Lori Wick

White Chocolate Moments by Lori Wick is contemporary fiction about a girl, Arcineh, whose parents died in an accident when she was 11 and was raised by her grandfather, Sam who was a wealthy owner of a company. She left when she was 18 because he took in her cousin and moved in with a friend, got several jobs, danced, and found romance and became a Christian and married. Issues it deals with are death, reconciliation and love. I liked it!

"Where Are You Now?" by Mary Higgins Clark

Where Are You Now by Mary Higgins Clark is a novel that takes place in New York City about Carolyn, a lawyer, trying to find her older brother who has been missing for ten years but calls once a year on Mother’s Day.  He was a student at Columbia University and just disappeared one day.  As she digs into the past, she starts finding some circumstantial evidence that makes the detectives think her brother, Mac, may be a serial killer and that’s why he chose to disappear.  Carolyn thinks he must be in trouble and just wants to find him to help.  I don’t want to say too much about the plot because I don’t want to spoil it for you, but this book has suspense, romance and mystery.

I liked this book because it led me to believe one thing but ended up being something completely different than I expected.  I enjoy books that have surprise endings that I don’t figure out right from the start and this is certainly one of them! If you like mysteries, I highly recommend Where Are You Now?.

"Can't Get There From Here" by Todd Strasser

Can't Get There From Here by Todd Strasser was good book about a homeless teen girl who lost her street family one by one and finally chooses to get off the streets. I feel for bad for homeless people and this book made me think about even more problems the homeless have.  This book really opened my eyes to what some youth go through and I was pulling for the girl to finally trust someone who could help her.  Although his is fiction, there are many kids who are in this situation and face these problems every day.  I highly recommend this book.

"Salem Falls" by Jodi Picoult

"Salem Falls" by Jodi Picoult is a good book right from page one about a girls nice soccer coach who was falsely accused of rape twice. First time he took a plea bargain and served 8 months in jail. Second time, Jordan McAfee, got a "Not Guilty" verdict so he was set free, but most town people didn't want him around and were still afraid of him. He was a master at Jeopardy and fell in love with Addie, the diner owner who he washed dishes for when he first came to town after getting out of jail the first time. I could hardly put it down.

I liked this book a lot except for the witchcraft in it, but even through that I learned more about it.  I found myself despising the girl who cried rape and ruined the coach's life. I highly recommend this.  It's one of my favorite Picout books!

"Obsessive Obsession" by Toye Brown

I recently learned that one of my co-workers also published a book, Obsessive Obsession, through Outskirts Press so we exchanged books.  Obsessive Obsession is Toye Brown’s first book.   It is a romantic suspense novel that starts slow but picks up speed as it goes.  It is about the love lives of a wealthy minister’s four daughters, Toni, Nayla, Belle and Tina, who find love with good men.  The suspense comes when someone tries to extort money from the family and puts all of them in danger.  Instead of reporting it to the authorities, the women and their boyfriend detectives and husbands work together to solve it on their own.  Although the women were raised in a Christian family, they depart from their Christian upbringing when they become romantically involved.

I liked the story line showing how the family supported one another and worked together to get to the bottom of the mystery of who was doing the stalking and trying to destroy them.  Of the couples, I liked Nayla and Ben the best.  My favorite line was when Tina said to Nayla, “Oh my god, Nayla, you are a walking disaster waiting to happen.”  I would classify this as a light humorous suspense romance with a sweet happy ending.

It has some bad language and the couples calling each other “baby” all the time got on my nerves.  I had a hard time at the beginning keeping all the characters straight so appreciated the list of characters in the Prologue which I found myself referring back to quite often.  It was very helpful.  If you are looking for great literature, this isn’t it. However, if you can overlook a lot of spelling errors, and let yourself enjoy the story, it’s worth your while.

"The Last White Knight" by Tami Hoag

The Last White Knight by Tami Hoag is a simplistic romance about a counselor to wayward teen girls falling in love with a good politician.  She has a troubled past she is not proud of and does not feel worthy of such a good guy.  The theme is about letting go of the past to have a good future and not punishing yourself forever for mistakes.  I thought it would be more about the girls she counseled, but that was very small part.  It was okay but I'll stick to her suspense novels over the romance ones.

"Sophie's Heart" by Lori Wick

Sophie's Heart is a contemporary, heartwarming Christian romance about a grieving widower and his three children who hire Sophie, a Christian immigrant from Czechoslovakia, to be their cook and housekeeper. It's a fun journey seeing how the family comes to love Sophie and how she slowly becomes more Americanized. Throughout the book, the author reveals Sophie's heart through her prayers and one can see what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ by reading this book. I enjoyed Sophie's interaction with her friends, her driving instructor, Alec but most of all with his children. It was refreshing to see how the oldest one, Rita, helped her instead of resenting her. This book gives great insight into what Christian living is all about!  One of my favorites.
