Tuesday Teasers: "Heartwood" and "Tiger Mother"

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should  Be Reading. Anyone can play along, so I thought  I  would play for fun! Just do the following
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on  that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away!   You don’t  want  to  ruin the  book for others!)
  • Share the title and author, too, so that other TT participants can  add the book to their TBR  Lists  if they  like your teaser.
Karen's:
"Robby, we're a couple.  There's no competition between us."  But that was a lie, and they both knew it.
From page 141 of Heartwood by Belva Plain.  (I finished this book Friday but wanted to share a teaser from it.  It was really hard to pick just one, there were so many good lines.  I posted my review of this yesterday.)

Gerard's:
Western parents worry a lot about their children's self-esteem.  But as a parent, one of the worst things you can do for your child's self-esteem is to let them give up.  On the flip side, there's nothing better for building confidence than learning you can do something you thought you couldn't.
From page 62 of Battle Hymn Of The Tiger Mother by Amy Chua.  (The true story about a mother, two daughters, and two dogs.)

You can help Canine Lifeline (a dog rescue organization that saved our dog, Abby) by leaving a comment on any of our blogs in March. We will donate 50 cents per comment at the end of the month.

  1. I love both of the teaser... competition between couples is a very real thing.

As for the parenting guide it's always a learning curve. You pray that it will go well for the children and that you've taught them to strive to achieve without fear.

  6. I particularly like Gerard's. So many parents seem to think it's a bad thing if their child doesn't immediately succeed at everything.

  10. I like both of your teasers. I've been hearing a lot about the Tiger Mothe here in the SF Bay area - good and bad - but haven't read it yet.

My group's teasers are here: Quirky Girls Read

  11. Aisle: In "Heartwood" the husband felt like a failure because his wife was so successful and his dream never panned out. The wife kept trying to encourage him and support him anyhow until she finally had enough of his whiny attitude.

Gerard thinks this Chinese woman is right on with her parenting ideas but I think she's a bit whacky although I do agree with her self-esteem philosophy in this quote.

jlshall: There was a big article in our newspaper about the Tiger Mom. That's how we first heard about this book. Most of the Amazon reviewers don't like it.

Gautami: Which one are you going to check out? Both? I am definitely requesting yours from the library. It sounds good!

Novroz: I agree with this particular quote, however, there are many other instances where I strongly disagree with this mom's parenting style.

Bev, Shirley, Sally, Margot: In this book though, the Chinese mom says that most Chinese consider A- a bad grade and if they come in second place in a contest, it's a disgrace. I picked the quote I agreed with, but there is a lot more to get into in this book. It would make for interesting discussion, I think.
