"Hawk Mountain" by Conner Habib

In Hawk Mountain by Conner Habib, Todd is at a beach relaxing with his son.  He sees a man coming toward his son and cannot believe his eyes.  It is Jack, who made his life hell in his high school years.  It has been 15 years since he last saw Jack.  What is going on?

I thought this book was good. I liked the story line and the characters.  It kept me turning pages for sure!  (Gerard's review, 5 stars)

"The Night Child" by Anna Quinn

In The Night Child by Anna Quinn, Nora is a high school English teacher.  She thinks that her husband is cheating on her and her relationship with her daughter, an only child, is so-so at best.  One day she sees an image in her classroom.  She blows it off, but when she sees it again, she goes to see a psychiatrist.  What is going on?  Can she be cured?

I thought this book was pretty good.  I never really knew what was going to happen next.  It's a quick read.  This is the author's first book--not bad at all.
(Gerard's review, 4 stars)

Teaser from page 10:  "I saw something, Paul, an apparition or I hallucinated or I'm going crazy or something."  She hears the instability in her voice and knows she is dangerously close to crossing a line.

"Rough Magic--Riding the World's Loneliest Horse Race" by Lara Prior Palmer

Rough Magic by Lara Prior-Palmer is a true story.  Lara, at the age of 19, decides on a whim to enter the longest and toughest horse race there is with no formal training!  How do you think she does?  This is a pretty good book!  The best part is when she does the race.
(Gerard's review, 4 stars)

Teaser from page 22:  It didn't surprise me that no one was taking my race attempt seriously.  I was that scatterbrain who lost Oyster cards on the Underground and failed driving tests.

"The Silent Patient" by Alex Michaelides

Wow! The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides is a shocking thriller about evil nature. At 33, Alicia Berenson killed her husband and became the silent patient who would not speak. She was put into a mental facility where none of the doctors could get her to talk, until Dr. Faber. Alicia is a painter and her husband a photographer. The story slowly unfolds and we don’t find out why Alicia killed her husband until the end. This kept my interest all the way through and I was pretty shocked by the ending. (Karen’s review, 4 stars)

Gerard's review 2/26/19:
In The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides, Alicia is a famous painter married to a successful husband.  Why then did she tie her husband to a chair and shoot him five times?  She never says another word!  Can she talk after that or is she just keeping quiet?  She is put in a mental hospital and is the "silent patient."  Theo is a criminal psychotherapist and wants to try to reach her and get the full story.  Can he do it?

Believe the hype around this one!  It is a NEW YORK TIMES best seller and movie rights already are in the works!  This is an adult novel.  The pacing of the book might seem slow, but it strings you along until the ending, then Bam!  Do not pass this one up, must read.  (5+ stars)

Teaser from page 35:  Her face was expressionless, blank.  A medicated mask.  I wondered what lay beneath.

"Good Me Bad Me" by Ali Land

In Good Me Bad Me by Ali Land, Annie lives with her mom who does things she should not do!  Annie goes to the police and tells on her mom, then into witness protection.  Ready to start a new life with a new name and family while waiting for the trial to begin.  Unfortunately, her new family and her do not seem to connect.  She will be good, won't she?

This is the author's first book and I must say I am impressed!  There is good pace to the book and the characters are very believable.    The trial was the best part with a surprise ending!  This is well worth reading.
(Gerard's review, 4.5 stars)

Teaser from page 6:  You turned your had to the side.  Faced me.  Your eyes never left mine, I read them with ease.  You said nothing to them, yet everything to me.

"BREACH" by W. L. Goodwater

Breach by W. L. Goodwater is a fantasy about a hole in the Berlin Wall that grows. The wall is held together by magic and hides a very dangerous magical book. Ehle, the creator of the breach wants to make sure the book gets destroyed Karen, a USA magician is chosen to assist the CIA in their mission to fix the wall. She finds herself mixed up in magic she never knew before.

This is a wild book that I liked because of Karen, the main character, and the various relationships she developed. There were several groups that was a bit of a challenge to keep straight and the writing style was difficult to follow at times because it was told from different points of view with poor transitioning. One just stopped and another began. There definitely was a lot of action and adventure in this book which made me want to keep reading.
(Karen’s review, 4 stars)

Teaser from page 23: It was always the same with men like George. “You only ever think about using your magic to smash something,” she said. “You might be surprised to learn it has other, less destructive uses.”
