"The Nature of Fragile Things" by Susan Meissner is Thrilling Historical Fiction

In The Nature of Fragile Things by Susan Meissner, an Irish woman comes to America to marry a man she has never met and knows nothing about.  That is just one of the multiple storylines in this book, all of which were interesting.  You will be engaged and get lost in this wonderful book.  There is lots of action and plenty of twists and turns.  Do not miss this one, it's a must read!  (Gerard's review, 5++ stars)

Karen's review Jan. 23, 2022:
The Nature of Fragile Things
by Susan Meissner is the story of a mail order bride from Ireland coming to San Francisco to marry a widower and become a mother to his 7-yr.-old daughter shortly before the great earthquake of 1906.  The full story unfolds slowly, but there is enough action along the way to keep the reader interested.  Sophie answers Martin Hocking's ad for a wife and mother because she is not happy living in bad conditions in New York and wants a home and a child to love.  Martin wants a wife to keep up appearances and to care for his daughter when he's away on business.  It is a loveless marriage purely of convenience.  This book is very good!  It is about family secrets, fraud, friendship and love.  (5 stars)

"The Secrets of Midwives" by Sally Hepworth

In The Secrets of Midwives by Sally Hepworth, Neva does not want anyone to know who the father is of the baby she is about to have.  Why?  Floss, Neva's grandmother, has a secret that goes back 60 years about her child's birth.  If that gets out there will be trouble for all!

As always, Sally made me care about these characters and had an ending I did not see coming at all!  (Gerard's review, 5 stars)

"The Mother's Promise" by Sally Hepworth

In The Mother's Promise by Sally Hepworth, Alice is a single mother who has a 15-yr.-old daughter, Zoe.  When Alice gets sick with Cancer, she is told that she needs a support person to help her and drive her around.  Unfortunately, she has no one except Zoe to count on.  Kate, a nurse, and Sonja, a social worker come to her aid, but they are dealing with their own problems.  This book is really good!  All the characters seem real.  I especially loved the parts with Zoe!  This is Sally's best book yet!  I LOVED IT!  (Gerard's review, 5++ stars)

In The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan, Frida is going through a rough time.  She has her daughter, Harriet, and that is enough for now.  Unfortunately, Frida makes a big mistake and has to prove she is a good mother in a government reform program or she will lose all rights to her daughter.  This is good stuff!  Frida was a good character and the storyline kept me engaged with a good ending.  (Gerard's review, 4 stars)

We Both Liked "Hostage" by Clare Mackintosh

Hostage by Clare Mackintosh is a thriller about an airline stewardess.  Too make it even more suspenseful, her 5-yr.-old daughter and her husband are going through a trauma of their own at home.  The hijacker threatened to harm her daughter if she did not let him into the cabin to fly the plane.  This was full of suspense and had a crazy ending I did not see coming.  (Karen's review, 5 stars)

Gerard's review:
In Hostage by Clare Mackintosh, Mina is an airline stewardess going on a non-stop flight, the first between London and Sydney.  It comes at a good time as she needs time away.  Her life is in a tailspin.  She is trained to handle a lot of things that could go wrong, but now she has to decide between the safety of her 5-yr.-old daughter or the people on the plane.  This book is told by many people which helps build the suspense.  In enjoyed it throughout!  (5+ stars)

"Her One Mistake" by Heidi Perks

In Her One Mistake by Heidi Perks, Charlotte and Harriet are friends.  When Charlotte is looking after Alice, Harriet's daughter, she is fine with that until Alice turns up missing!  How could that have happened?  This book is told by both Charlotte and Harriet.  I thought this book was very good.  The story line kept things interesting and what I thought I knew, I really didn't!  This is a very enjoyable read that I highly recommend!  (Gerard's review, 5++ stars)

Karen's review:
Her One Mistake by Heidi Perks is about two friends and a missing child.  Charlotte finally convinces Harriet that it's okay to let Charlotte take Harriet's little girl, 4-yr.-old Alice, to the fair along with her own kids.  Unfortunately, when Charlotte's kids come off the ride, Alice isn't with them.  They look everywhere but can't find her.  The police and many people also searched for her but she is gone!

The surprise turn of events captured my interest.  This one had me fooled! It was narrated by both Harriet and Charlotte.  This might make for an interesting book club read.  I found myself first feeling sorry for Harriet and then for Charlotte.  I was wrong about what I thought happened to Alice as well!  (4 stars)

"Seven Perfect Things" by Catherine Ryan Hyde

In Seven Perfect Things by Catherine Ryan Hyde, 13-yr.-old Abby sees a man dump a bag that has something moving in it into a river.  Abby gets the bag and finds seven puppies inside.  Now what to do?  Home is not an option because her dad is abusive to her mother and would never allow dogs in his house.

The characters in this book were brought out very well.  I liked Abby the best.  The story was paced well, but there were some parts that were hard to read.  That being said, I still enjoyed it.  (Gerard's review, 4 stars)

"Little Fires Everywhere" by Celeste Ng

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng is about motherhood and secrets.  I found this story to be thought provoking and heartbreaking.  It contrasts the lives of a rich upper class family of six, the Richardsons, with a single mother, Mia, who is an artist and struggles to provide for her and her teenage daughter.  Then another story line is about a Chinese birth mother who gave up her baby and now wants her back from the nice, well-to-do couple who has started the adoption process.  There is lots of emotion wrapped up in this book.  I think this would be an excellent book for a book club to discuss.  I enjoyed reading this but was a bit disappointed with the ending that was kind of left up in the air.  I think women would definitely enjoy this one more than men.

Loved "Keeping Lucy" by T. Greenwood

Keeping Lucy by T. Greenwood is based on a true story.  Ginny gives birth to a baby girl and names her Lucy.  At birth, the doctor tells her that her daughter is going to be a special needs child.  Her husband's father is a very rich and influential person.  He finds a way to keep Lucy out of sight and hopefully out of mind for Ginny.  But, things get out of control and Ginny goes to get her child back--this time for keeps!

I was into this book from page 1.  This book rang true to me.  The story flowed along well and I enjoyed Ginny very much!  LOVED IT!
(Gerard's review, 5++ stars)

Teaser from page 9:  "This is all a terrible mistake," she said, yanking her hand from his and swinging her legs over the edge of the bed to get up.  Her head felt swimmy and she could still taste the acrid vomit at the back of her throat.

"Safe with me " by Amy Hatvany

Safe with me by Amy Hatvany is about a grieving single mother, Hannah, whose only 12-yr.-old daughter, Emily) got killed in a car accident right in front of her house! She decides to allow the hospital to take Emily’s organs to save the lives of others. The other part of this story is Olivia, the mother of her teenage daughter, Maddie, the recipient of Emily’s liver. Hannah is a hair stylist and Olivia is the wife of a wealthy man who is sporadically abusive to her. Olivia and Maddie go to Hannah’s salon one day and hit it off.

I thought this was a okay story, but nothing really grabbed me. It was fairly predictable and pretty sad. I plodded through it but didn’t much care for it. I suppose it would be interesting to a person who has lost a child or was in an abusive situation, but for me, I couldn’t identify with any of the characters.

"The Unwinding of the Miracle" by Julie Yip-Williams

The Unwinding of the Miracle by Julie Yip-Williams is the true story of how Julie overcame so much. She was born blind in Vietnam.  Her grandmother wanted her killed just two days after she was born. With 300 other people in a boat, she made it to Hong Kong and then America where she attended Harvard and became a very good lawyer. She married and had two daughters.  But unfortunately, she could not overcome colon Cancer.  She wrote this book for her daughters to remember her.

Julie tells her story and pulls no punches.  There is some humor also.  Rest in peace, Julie.  Job well done!  (Gerard's review, 5+ stars)

Teaser from page 8:  But also as your mother, I want you to feel the pain, to live it, embrace it, and then learn from it.  Be stronger people because of it, for you will know that you carry my strength within you.

"Life and Other Inconveniences" by Kristan Higgins is Heartwarming and Touching

Life and Other Inconveniences by Kristan Higgins is a heartwarming, touching novel about family, love, grief, marriage and personal relationships. This is not a book with action but about life issues such as brother rivalry, unwed mother, marriage, suicide, single parenting, death, wealth, self-esteem, illness and family relationships.

It started out slow for me and I was a bit confused at first because of so many characters to keep straight. I even set it aside and almost gave up on it but am glad I finished it.  I liked the dogs though and Luigi, Miller's cat.  The ending was very touching and made me tear up. I chose to read this one because I saw a book club recommended it and I saw it also recommended other books I enjoyed. Discussions questions are included in the back for book clubs. (4 stars)

Teaser from page 5: A few years ago, I’d told Riley the facts: Genevieve London of the adorable purses was my grandmother, and I’d lived with her for ten years after my mother died because my father couldn’t take care of me. I explained that Genevieve wasn’t the nicest person, so we didn’t talk anymore.

"Never Look Back" by Alison Gaylin

In Never Look Back by Alsion Gaylin, two teenage girls went on a killing spree before they killed themselves, so, the story goes.  But 40 years later, a podcast producer want to dig into this story to make sure it checks out.  Mean while, Robin has to deal with a husband who maybe fooling around, and could her mom have been one of those teenage girls who killed those people?

This book was okay.  I had no trouble with the story line and Robin was a good character.  It just seemed to drag in some places.  A lot of words and nothing was really going on.  I did like the ending though which was a big surprise!
(Gerard's review, 4 stars)

Teaser from page 24:  I made myself touch Gabriel.  I put my hand to his cheek and felt a tear.

"The Chain" by Adrian McKinty is a Page Turning Thriller

The Chain by Adrian McKinty is about a chain of kidnappings by a lot of different people!  Normal people find themselves becoming kidnappers when their child is kidnapped in order to save their child!  The chain continues because of fear and intimidation while lots of money goes to the creator of this scheme.

This was a page turner for me.  It definitely kept my attention and made me see how "good" people could be made to do very bad things.  The mystery of who organized the chain was also incentive for me to keep reading; however, I was able to figure it out pretty early on in Part 2.  The ending was hard to believe, but I liked it.  I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys thrillers and suspense.
(Karen's review, 5 stars)

The Chain by Adrian McKinty is about a mother's worst fear--the kidnapping of her daughter.  The mother is pushed to limits that she did not think were possible to try to get her daughter back.  This book is told in two parts--the main part is first and that is really, really good!  I was hooked from the first page!  The pacing of the book is very well done and it is action packed!  The second part is short and wraps up the book.  That part was just okay.  On the basis of the first part being so good, I still give this 5 stars and recommend it.  It is well worth reading!
(Gerard's review, 7/17/19)

Teaser from page 9:  Kylie lifts her head but keeps her eyes tightly shut.  She's still trembling.  The state trooper has seen that something is amiss.

"Modern Girls" by Jennifer S. Brown (Mother/Daughter Book)

Modern Girls by Jennifer S. Brown is about some Jewish immigrant families in New York during the great depression.   The story is told from alternating views of Rosa, the mother, Dottie, her daughter who finds herself in a predicament.  Both mother and daughter get pregnant.  Rosa is 42 years old and Dottie isn't married, but has been seeing Abe for three years, waiting for him to save up enough money to rent their own place when they get married.  Abe is a virtuous Jew and Dottie knows the baby is not his, but a handsome, wealthy, playboy journalist named Willie Klein is the father.  Gossip is spreading throughout her neighborhood, her mother had saved up money for her to go to college, and Dottie is desperate to get Abe to think the baby is his.  She really wants to keep the baby, but her mother has made an appointment to have it "taken care of."  Will she be able to have her happily ever after ending with Abe?  Will she get the abortion?  Will she end up marrying Willie?  How will Rosa be able to help her daughter?

This book kept my interest, and I did like Dottie in spite of her big mistake.  I also liked her mother although she had some secrets of her own!   I also enjoyed Dottie's brothers and thought Willie and Abe were interesting characters.  I liked how they were pretty much opposites and yet Dottie liked them both.  I would have liked more of the story as it has an open-ended ending.  I think this would make a good book club read since there's much that could be discussed.
(Karen's review, 4 stars)

Teaser from page 21:  Abe would work at the store during the day.  Ma would watch the kids for a few hours, and I'd continue at the insurance company.  The picture was dreamy and I smiled before remembering I had botched it all up.

"Never Tell" by Lisa Gardner

Never Tell by Lisa Gardner is about Evie and her family of secrets. Coming from a very wealthy family whose father was a mathematical genius, Evie at 16 took the blame for accidentally shooting her father while cleaning his shot gun to save the family embarrassment of his suicide. Now, recently pregnant, she faces murder charges for killing her husband, Conrad. Poor Evie! She did not kill her husband, but then the question is who did? She did shoot up his computer because of what she saw on the screen from the dark web when she found him dead in his chair with his gun in his lap. Not only that, but then her house is burned down to the ground the very next day! Her mother takes her in after posting bail, but Evie thinks her mom hates her. Evie really freaks out when she begins learning about her husband’s dark secrets and wonders if she knew him at all! Is he really a predator or a hero?

This is quite the murder mystery with lies, arson, secrets, betrayal and lots of detective work. My favorite character was Flora, a survivor of an abduction who assists Detective D.D. Warren in solving the case and comes to Evie’s rescue. I liked this book because I got into it right away from page 1 and liked how it unfolded. I liked how the author handled the darkness in this story without a lot of gore. I dare you to read this one without feeling bad for Evie!
(Karen’s review, 4 stars)

Teaser from page 13:  Had I known all along?  Turning into the drive?  Pulling into the garage?  The interior door open, open, open.
