Tell Me Everything by Elizabeth Strout is a novel about a small town. It includes four short stories that include the same people. The people in the stories are developed really well. This was a different kind of read for me, but I enjoyed it very much! (Gerard's review, 5 stars)

"How to Age Disgracefully" by Clare Pooley
How to Age Disgracefully by Clare Pooley is about a handful of older people who band together to stop their senior center from being shut down. I enjoyed it! I liked the characters and it was funny at times too. The story line kept the book moving along and there is even a dog in it which always is a good thing! This is an enjoyable, light read. "Mind Games" by Nora Roberts
Mind Games by Nora Roberts is about a young girl named Thea. Her parents are killed by a man who breaks into their home. She is devastated but has a gift that helps the cops catch this man and put him in prison. Thea builds a good life, but knows that the killer who has the same gift as she does, will never leave her alone till he gets revenge on her for putting him in prison.
This is good stuff as always with Nora Roberts. It had a good story line with great characters and I enjoyed Bunk, the dog in the story. (Gerard's review, 5++ stars)

"Days of Wonder" by Caroline Leavitt
In Days of Wonder by Caroline Leavitt, at age 15 Ella did a very bad thing. She tried to kill someone! She was pregnant at the time and they took her baby from her while she went to prison. She got out when she was 22. She wants to see her daughter, but how will she find her? And if so, will her daughter want to see her? This is only one of many great story lines in this book! This is family drama at its best. I came to care about the characters and got lost in this book because the story line is that good! This is one of the best books I have read this year. LOVED IT! Do not miss this one! (Gerard's review, 5++ stars)

"Help Wanted" by Adelle Waldman
Help Wanted by Adelle Waldman is about a group of people who work at a store like Wallmart. They arrive at their job at 4 a.m. to set up the store before it opens. If you work or worked at a store like this or a warehouse like I did, you can easily relate to this book. If you worked in an office, I'm not sure if you would like this. I enjoyed the characters and no one was murdered which was a refreshing change of pace for me. It is a quick read and well worth the time. (Gerard's review, 4 stars)

"Everyone Is Watching" by Heather Gudenkauf
Everyone Is Watching by Heather Gudenkauf is a page turner thriller! I was hooked right from the start and found it hard to put down. It is about a reality TV show with a prize of $10,000,000 and five contestants got an email invitation saying they were nominated to be on the show. Similar to the TV show Survivor, but the challenges are brutal and the audience decides who must leave, not the players. As contestant's private secrets are revealed, it becomes clear that this is much more than just a show. The background of the characters is gradually revealed as the book goes on.
This was wild and entertaining. I enjoyed the challenges best, and really couldn't figure out the connection to all the characters. This was an entertaining and enjoyable read for me since I like Survivor and competition. I never knew what was going to happen next since this is packed with surprises all along the way! I recommend you read this one and see if you can guess who wins. (Karen's review, 5 stars)
If you like reality shows, Everyone Is Watching by Heather Gudenkauf is the book for you! Five people are playing for a chance to win ten million dollars! You can pick a person and see if they win. What do they have to do? You will have to read the book to find out! This book was pretty much action filled. I LOVED IT! It is wild from start to finish! I highly recommend this one! Even if you aren't big on reality TV shows (like me), you may still like this since I did! (5++ stars)

"After Annie" by Anna Quindlen is Fantastic!
After Annie by Anna Quindlen blew me away! WOW! Annie dies all of a sudden and leaves her husband who has no house cleaning or childcare experience at all and works all hours of the day! Their 14-yr.-old girl now has to look after her three young brothers and keep the house clean. As far as cooking goes, she knows how to make toasted cheese sandwiches but little else. Will this family pull together and remember what their mother taught hem and told them, or will it fall apart?
This book is about true life! This is my favorite book so far this year and I highly recommend you read it! If you only read one book this year, make it this one! (Gerard's review, 5++ stars)

"LEFT BEHIND by Tim Lahaye and Jerry B. Jenkins (Series #1)
LEFT BEHIND by Tim Lahaye and Jerry B. Jenkins is the first book in a series about end times based on scripture. When people mysteriously disappear, Buck, a journalist is assigned to write about the different theories people have. Rayford, a pilot, thinks maybe his wife was right all along about needing a personal relationship with God and that this is the rapture she was talking about a lot lately. Her and their son have both disappeared leaving him and Chloe, their daughter. He contacts their church, hoping someone is there and meets with a pastor who was also left behind because he hadn't been a true follower of Jesus.
I liked the parts in this book about Rayford and his family, but the journalist parts I got a little bored with, although they all do tie together. I heard a lot about this series but never read it so when I saw the whole series at the Parma Heights senior center, I decided I would read it. I liked this book all right. It's certainly thought provoking. (Karen's review, 4 stars)

"The Mother's Promise" by Sally Hepworth
In The Mother's Promise by Sally Hepworth, Alice is a single mother who has a 15-yr.-old daughter, Zoe. When Alice gets sick with Cancer, she is told that she needs a support person to help her and drive her around. Unfortunately, she has no one except Zoe to count on. Kate, a nurse, and Sonja, a social worker come to her aid, but they are dealing with their own problems. This book is really good! All the characters seem real. I especially loved the parts with Zoe! This is Sally's best book yet! I LOVED IT! (Gerard's review, 5++ stars)

"Ready Player Two" by Ernest Cline
Ready Player Two by Ernest Cline is the sequel to Ready Player One which we both liked. In this book, Wade is back with all his friends. They face a new danger and the clock is ticking. The first part of this book was good but the second part was very bad. I did not like it at all! I give it only 2.5 stars but that is because the ending was decent. I can't say I enjoyed this one. "You and Me and Us" by Alison Hammer is Very Good!
You and Me and Us by Alison Hammer is told mostly by Alexis who lives with Tommy. Tommy always wanted to have a wedding and make it official, but Alexis does not want that. CeCe, their daughter, also tells some of the story. Tommy has always been there for CeCe. Alexis, who runs her own business, not so much. Unfortunately, Tommy has health issues and his time is short. The story is about how these two women deal with this and other things that come up.
I was into this book from page 1. The writing is good and I enjoyed all the characters very much. I think this book would make a good movie! Must read this one! (Gerard's review, 5++ stars)
Teaser from page 25: "It won't. And I'm not going to put you or CeCe through what I went through with my mom. The false hope, the pain and suffering."

"Dear Edward" by Ann Napolitano
In Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano, a young boy named Edward is the only person to survive a plane crash. The reader gets two stories: (1) Edward's life after the crash, and (2) the story of some other people on the plane, including Edward's family. I liked this book because I enjoyed both of the story lines and the writing. (Gerard's review, 5 stars)
Teaser from page 27: "Well, just so you know, several Facebook pages have sprung up, devoted to either the flight or to Edward. There was also a Twitter account called @miracleboy, with Edward's face as the avatar, but that's been taken down."

"Who Stole My Church" by Gordon MacDonald (Writer's Workshop--Last Book I Read)
Who Stole My Church by Gordon MacDonald is about a pastor of a church who decides to meet with a group from his congregation every week to get feedback and to discuss what is going on in their church. This was very different from books I usually read and was dry for me. There really isn't much to get excited about--it was like going to a long church meeting. I did find the life situations people were going through outside of church interesting.
(Gerard's review, 3.5 stars)
Karen's review of 5/30/19:
When our Sr. Pastoral candidate said if he were called to be our Senior Pastor at Parma Heights Baptist Church, Who Stole My Church? by Gordon MacDonald would be required reading, I went home and ordered it from the library. In an introductory meeting with the leadership of the church, one of the questions asked of him was what book other than the Bible has had an influence on your life. His answer was Who Stole My Church?.
This is a thought-provoking fiction book about a typical congregation of a few hundred people in New England and a Pastor who wants to make changes to reach more people for Christ. An older segment of people in the church oppose spending lots of money on upgrading a sound system in the sanctuary, feel as though everything revolves around the young people, miss singing the old hymns and feel like they are in a war fighting to keep their church the way it’s always been. The pastor and his wife are based on the author’s real experiences. In the book, the Pastor creates a small group of 15 seniors who are core people in the church to meet once a week to discover their church and to understand why many things about the way they have made church work must change and reflect new realities. It is about how people face change when it threatens their comfort zone.
I thought the beginning was pretty dull when it discussed the importance of loving the church, but things picked up. I liked how easily I could relate to those in the Discovery Group and can see why our Pastoral candidate (who has accepted the call by the way to become our Sr. Pastor) recommended we read this book. It showed why changes are necessary and how both the young and older generations need to understand each other in order to work together towards a common goal—reaching the lost with the gospel of Jesus Christ. I found the history of music chapter very interesting and whenever it mentioned a hymn, I would start singing or humming it! This is a book that definitely challenges some introspection and made me see things a bit differently when I was done. I too would recommend it to anyone who is involved in a church that is interested in seeing their church grow and reach the younger generation with the gospel. (4 stars)
Teaser from page 113: “Does all the music we love have to be thrown out the window just because the young people want something different?” Lillian asked. “Isn’t there anyplace for the music we grew up loving?”

"Child's Play" by Danielle Steel is between a Hallmark Movie and a Lifetime Movie
In Child's Play by Danielle Steel, Kate Morgan is a senior partner at a big law firm in New York. She had to overcome the death of her husband when she was in her 30s having to raise three children--2 girls, 1 boy. It was tough, but she did it and she is proud of them. Life is good, but life has a way of changing as Kate is going to discover! This book was like a mix between a Hallmark movie and a Lifetime flick. I enjoyed all the characters, especially Kate's mother. I does not take much brain power to figure how all this is going to play out, but I enjoyed it anyway.
(Gerard's review, 5 stars)
Teaser from page 30: Kate knew that was true. She believed that you had to set the bar high. They were al successful in their chosen fields, no one had made any terrible mistakes, and Kate liked it that way.

"The Escape Room" by Megan Goldin is SO GOOD!
The Escape Room by Megan Goldin is a wild thriller about ruthless investment bankers who are controlled by greed. Four find themselves trapped inside an elevator for what they think is an exercise in team building. Sarah Hall is ecstatic to get hired and become part of this team, but when they turn on her when she tries to do the right thing, her life goes south fast.
This is a contemporary thriller that kept my interest. I liked Sarah Hall and Lucy, but did not like Sam, Jules, Sylvie or Vincent. I would strongly recommend that you do not read the prologue because it sort of gives away the ending. I liked the ending to this one in some ways, but think it is also sad in a way! I finished this in two days!
(Karen's review, 5 stars)
Gerard's review 8-20-19, 5++ stars:
The Escape Room by Megan Goldin is about a group of investment bankers. Their firm only hires the best of the best! One day, this group has to meet for a team-building training exercise. They are a competitive bunch and discover that the exercise becomes a test for survival!
This is such a great debut thriller! The pacing of the book is excellent! The characters were brought out really well and it is very believable! I had to keep going to see how it all played out. You must read this one! I LOVED IT!
Teaser from page 154: It all gave me temporary amnesia, or perhaps willful blindness, at the damage we'd wrought on the lives of the nameless people at the factory in Michigan, or a hundred other places affected by our decisions. We used profit as justification for shattering lives.

"The Rising" by Heather Graham and Jon Land - Science Fiction
The rising by Heather Graham and Jon Land has two main characters: Alex, a star high school quarterback who looks forward to being a QB in college and the pros; and Samantha who has big future plans, but for now is a tutor to Alex. She would love to have a future with Alex. Alex gets hurt in a game and is rushed to the hospital. The test results are like nothing the doctors have ever seen and a secret that has been hidden for many years will come out!
This thriller is pretty good. I loved Alex and Samantha and the story line was good too! This is well worth reading.
(Gerard's review, 4.5 stars)
Karen's review:
Well, I disagree with my husband's review on this and his rating. The Rising by Heather Graham and Jon Land is the first in a science fiction series about Alex who is human, but al from some other planet far, far away which he remembers nothing about since he came to earth when just a baby. He was the star of his high school football team, but when he got clobbered in the head breaking up a tackle, his life changed! He and is tutor, Samantha, find themselves on the run.
I did not care of this book and was very happy when I finally reached the end. No way will I continue with this series. Absolutely nothing made any sense to me. I just thought the story line was very dumb and the characters were just okay, not very well developed. The only reason I continued reading to the end was because I thought things might make sense if I read it all, but I was wrong. I didn’t enjoy this at all and certainly would not recommend it to anyone! (2 stars)
Teaser from page 37: Then Alex realized it wasn't just that he couldn't get up, he couldn't even move. Started to suck in a deep breath when he realized he couldn't breathe, either.

"The Wife Between Us" by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen
The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen has incorrectly been compared to Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train in my opinion. I think it's laughable! Those two books were way better! The three main characters in this book are Richard, who has tons of money; Vanessa, who was his wife for a while; and Emma, his soon-to-be-wife. This book had its moments, but needed more action for me. The story line was okay and the ending was very good which surprised me!
(Gerard's review, 3.5 stars)
Karen's review:
The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen is a slow moving psychological thriller with twists I didn’t see coming. Richard appears to be the perfect husband, but when his “perfect” wife doesn’t meet his high expectations, he loses his temper. It’s almost as if he is two different people, very caring and affectionate at times, and then abusive and mean at other times. When Vanessa feels guilty about her manipulating, she actually tries to save Richard’s finance from marrying him.
This book was very slow moving for me about a bad marriage and the only reason I kept reading was because it was recommended to me by a friend. It does pick up and becomes more interesting eventually, but I had to plow my way through it. Some things just made no sense to me in the beginning. If you don’t mind a long road to a satisfying ending, then you would probably enjoy this one. If you prefer a fast-paced, action packed book with adventure and twists and turns, skip this one. It’s not for you. I only liked one character, Samantha, who was not a main one. (3 stars)
Teaser from page 19: Richard is engaged. My husband is actually going to marry her.
Teaser from page 10: Morning is the worst time because, for a brief moment, my brain is clear. The reprieve is so cruel.

"Someone Knows" by Lisa Scottoline
Someone Knows by Lisa Scottoline is about young teens who decided to play a prank. It turned out tragically wrong! Now Allie, after 20 years goes back to where it all began and she will get to the truth about that night. I thought this book was pretty good. It is told by a lot of people which I thought added to the story. The part I did not like is that it sort of took forever and a day to get to the real action. That being said, I still give it 4 stars. This is not one of her best books, but I'm still glad I read it. It just took some patience to get to the good part. (Gerard's review)

"Saving Meghan" by D. J. Palmer -- Can you love someone to death?
Saving Meghan by D. J. Palmer is contemporary fiction. Some people would say Becky should be "Mother of the Year" since she is focused on her only child, Meghan 24-7. She has to be because Meghan is ill but countless doctors cannot figure out what it is. Becky will do whatever it takes to find out what is wrong with her daughter! Carl is the father. He wants what is best for Meghan, but thinks he knows what the problem is, and it is not medical!
I enjoyed this book very much. The characters were brought out really well and the story flowed along. Throw some twists in the book and at times I laughed out loud at some parts. Try to figure out how all this plays out. I am guessing you won't just like I couldn't.
(Gerard's review, 5+ stars)
Teaser from page 27: I could tell by the way he looked at me with sadness and sympathy that he'd do anything and everything to make me well again. But there was a deep sense of loss in that look, too. He was sure he lost me to her--to my mom.

This book is fiction but it rings true to life for me. It goes fast and the story moves along at a good pace. Give it a try, you will be glad you did!
(Gerard's review, 5 stars)
Teaser from page 9: Carolina wipes a tear from her face as she looks down at me. She takes a deep breath and it hitches, stuck in her lungs, refusing to release.
