"Mandy and the Missouri Man" by Linda Ford

Mandy and the Missouri Man by Linda Ford is an interesting western romance about forgiveness.  Mandy and her two sisters are called the Buffalo Gals and live together where they provide food to the gold miners. Their pa left and one day Mandy discovers Trace and his 16-yr.-old sister, Cora, whose face was burned in the fire that killed their parents.  She is very self-conscious about letting anyone see her face.  At first, Mandy wants them off "her" land but becomes friends as they race to build their houses.  Trace is full of hate for those who set the fire killing his parents and his "friends" who he feels betrayed him.

I enjoyed this book because the characters were likable and it is a clean romance without any sex scenes.  There is humor and even a kitten!  It was fun seeing the relationship between Mandy and Trace blossom.  (Karen's review, 4 stars)

Miracles--32 True Stories by Joanie Hileman

Miracles--32 True Stories by Joanie Hileman is a collection of short stories of 32 different people who experienced a miracle in their life.  Some are healing when the doctors gave no hope, some are completely transformed lives, some deal with family issues and some with children.  Each story lists several scripture verses after it which apply.

Here are the websites some of the stories mentioned about where they found help:

-Turn For Christ (www.uturn4christ.com) as a place that helped them get off drugs.
Teen Challenge USA (www.teenchallengeusa.com)
Hume Lake (www.Humelake.org)
Calvary Chapel Central Maine School of Ministry (www.ccbangor.org)

Jesus Is (www.jesusis.com)

I really enjoyed this book because it was so interesting and encouraging to see how great and wonderful God is and that He is still performing miracles today.  This is very inspirational and well worth reading!  I highly recommend it!

Riveting Memoir: "The Blood Of Lambs--A Former Terrorist's Memoir of Death and Redemption" by Kamal Saleem

The Blood of Lambs by Kamal Saleem  tells the true story of his life and his change from being a follower of Allah to being a follower of Jesus Christ.  At the age of 7 he was trained to become an Islamic terrorist!  It is a fascinating read.  I didn't know how they train these people, but I do now and it is very scary!  The story of how he became to speak out against terrorism is mind-blowing.  You have to read it to believe it!
(Gerard's review, 5++ stars)

WOW! That's the word that kept coming into my mind as I read The Blood of Lambs--A Former Terrorist's Memoir of Death and Redemption by Kamal Saleem with Lynn Vincent. It is the most interesting memoir I have ever read!  I was fascinated by what the Muslims believe and have a better understanding of how Muslim terrorists think.  Kamal was abused and bullied as a kid, and found acceptance and protection when recruited as a boy soldier.  All his life he was raised to hate and at age 7, attended a terrorist training camp where they trained with live ammunition.  This man had a vast number of experiences that were completely new to me, including many near death experiences.  His childhood is heartbreaking and even after he came to America and was converted to Christianity, his bravery continues as he publicly shares his story and warns the U.S. to wake up to what the Jihad is up to.  His life is always in danger!

I learned so much from reading this book!  I am not into politics at all so thought this book might be boring and read like a history text book, but I was so wrong!  It is a very interesting and captivating read because wanting to know what happened to bring about this terrorist's conversion to Christianity kept me turning the pages.  This is not the kind of book I normally would read, but it was recommended to me by a friend in an email that went into detail about it which piqued my interest.  Now I am recommending it to you!

"The Key on the Quilt" by Stephanie Grace Whitson

It even had kittens in this book!
The Key On The Quilt (first book in "The Quilt Chronicles" series) by Stephanie Grace Whitson is a wonderful story about the unlikely friendship of three different women and how God worked in each of their lives.  In this historical Christian fiction novel, Jane is serving a 10-yr. sentence in prison for murdering her second husband while her sister takes care of Jane’s little girl, Rose.  All the while, Jane hopes to be reunited with her daughter one day.  While in prison, Jane works on a quilt for her daughter that she trusts will be a reminder to Rose of her mother’s love and instrumental in reuniting them.

With some blossoming romances as well as interesting lives and insight into prison life,  I think this would be a good book club read and highly recommend it to women, especially if you like quilting. It does have discussion questions in the back.  This is the first book I read by this author, just found it browsing at the library but think I will read more by this author.

Read my Teaser if you like.

"Need You Now" by Beth Wiseman

Need You Now by Beth Wiseman was written to help struggling families. Brad and Darlene moved to the country to get their teenage son, Chad, away from the bad influence of his city friends. When Darlene befriends her neighbor, Layla, a divorced woman who is bitter at God for letting her daughter die, through her friendship Layla returns to faith in God while Darlene’s falters. Brad’s and Darlene’s happy Christian family runs into a crisis when they discover their oldest daughter, Grace, cutting herself. Fortunately, the daughter has a Christian friend who convinces her to get counseling. Brad and Darlene both love their daughter but have different ideas as to how to deal with her cutting which drives a wedge between them. Problems start to snowball in the marriage when communication breaks down and Darlene is faced with temptation of infidelity and believes her husband is having an affair. Of course, this being Christian fiction, it has a happy ending.

This is a good book about friendship and how God is our best friend of all. It was realistic in that it showed Christian families have problems too. If you like stories about families and parenting, I highly recommend this one.

"No Distance Too Far" by Lauraine Snelling

Didn't care much for this one--too slow.

No Distance Too Far by Lauraine Snelling is Christian fiction set in 1904. Astrid, the main character, is a woman doctor who desires to follow God's will; she's just not sure what that is. She is not sure if God wants her to be a medical missionary in Africa, to work with her mentor or stay in Blessing to assist in her sister-in-laws medical practice or work on an Indian reservation with Red Hawk. She also wonders if Joshua is the man for her.

I liked the part where she was at the mission school, but it moved slowly and I didn't much care for it.

"Unplanned" by Abby Johnson with Cindy Lambert

You have to read Unplanned by Abby Johnson because it's just so good! It's the true story of Abby, who was a leader of a Planned Parenthood chapter. One day she had to see the actual abortion, and that changed her whole life from then on. The story is amazing! A coalition For Life was praying right next door and she went to join them. But the part I really enjoyed in this book is her relationship with God! She shares how God can use anyone to spread His word and Abby praying is so good! I got chills reading about it.

This is a powerful book that you will not want to put down. Abby, if you are reading this, thanks for sharing and God bless your husband, daughter and you. You wrote a fantastic book!

"The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven" by Kevin & Alex Malarkey

At age 17, Alex recanted this story, saying he made it up.  See Boy Who Claimed He Went to Heaven Recants.  It's still a good story, but fiction.

This video is by the publisher of The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven which I thought really told about the book well:

The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven by Kevin and Alex Malarkey is the true story told by the father and son who were in a terrible car accident together.  Alex, the 6-yr. old son, was severely injured and was in a coma for two months.  Many people gathered to pray for him and when Alex woke up, he told his parents about seeing Jesus and how beautiful heaven was.  Angels ministered to him and he was able to see five angels surround his dad at the scene of the accident.  Alex is the first child to have the “Christopher Reed” surgery so he could breathe without a ventilator.  Alex talked about Jesus to everyone he met.

This is an inspiring story of hope to those who have loved ones in comas or who are trusting God for healing.  The purpose of writing this book is to show the power of God and be an encouragement to others.  It is a remarkable story and the things Alex mentions about heaven are scriptural and consistent with what Captain Black wrote about in his book, Flight to Heaven.  It was heartwarming to see how believers in Jesus supported the family and came through for them time and again to meet their needs.

The father also shares about the struggles their family was going through in addition to taking care of Alex which included, a new baby who came home just the day before the accident, financial struggles, marriage issues. The message of what an amazing God we have is throughout the book.

It is thought provoking and although maybe not a page turner, I liked it. If you are interested in reading a modern-day account about angels, heaven and spiritual warfare, I highly recommend this book!
