"Immortal Longings" by Chloe Gong

In Immortal Longings by Chloe Gong, Princess Calla has been in hiding for five years.  She killed her parents and now she plans to kill the king of her country.  However, she must win the annual games to get a chance to meet with the king.  If you loved HUNGER GAMES, then this is the book for you.  It has good action with a good storyline and a great ending!  I look forward to Book 2 of this series.  (Gerard's review, 5 stars)

"The Last Invitation" by Darby Kane

The Last Invitation
by Darby Kane centers on two women, Gabby and Jessa.  They both have secrets.  Jessa joins a secret group of women who make it their business to take care of  abusive men.  When Gabby gets involved too, they both realize that this is not the group for them.  However, they soon learn that once you are in, there is no turning back.  This is good stuff.  I enjoyed both of the main characters and the storyline moved along well.  (Gerard's review, 5 stars)

"The Wife Upstairs" by Rachel Hawkins Is One We Both Liked

In The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins, Jane is trying to make her life better so she takes a job as a dog walker in a rich neighborhood.  By chance she meets Eddie who is rich, charming and good looking.  Things are looking up for Jane and when they decide to get married, Jane is on Easy Street, or is she?  This is a wild read with a good storyline that kept me interested.  The characters were good too with a make-up-your-own ending.  (Gerard's review, 4 stars)

Karen's review 2/22/23:
The Wife Upstairs
by Rachel Hawkins is a strange murder mystery/romance.  Jane, a broke dog walker with wealthy clients steals from them and falls for Eddie, a rich widower who expresses interest in her as well.  His wife was presumed dead but he has his wife stashed away in an upstairs hidden panic room!  Jane works to be accepted by the bored housewives in the neighborhood and finally is once she gets engaged to Eddie.

This one is a crazy read, with a strange storyline and deceptive characters.  I enjoyed this book because it had an unusual storyline that kept my interest with no idea how it would end.  The people were pretty creepy.  As usual with these mysteries, the police don't do a very good job.  This book did make me want to keep reading and get back to it.  The only thing I didn't care for was the ending--I would have liked some more details.  (4 stars)

"Killers of a Certain Age" by Deanna Raybourn

Killers of a Certain Age
by Deanna Raybourn is about how four retired women assassins scheme, plot and fight for their survival against the very organization that hired and trained them to be killers.  This book moved slow for me, but had me interested right from the start.  It had a bit of humor but not enough to say it was humorous.  It is narrated from the point of view of Billie, one of the old women assassins.  The characters seemed shallow.  I felt they could have been developed more.  I'm glad I stuck with it though because the last few chapters were very good!  (Karen's review, 3 stars)

"He Started It" by Samantha Downing

In He Started It by Samantha Downing, grown up children from the same family have to take a long road trip because there is a huge amount of money waiting.  Will they play nice and all make it to the end?  This is a good easy read with short chapters, good storyline and a great ending!  (Gerard's review, 5 stars)

"Outsider" by Linda Castillo

The Outsider by Linda Castillo is about Gina, a dirty cop hiding out at an Amish man's farm putting him and his children in danger.  Her fellow dirty cops are after her because they believe she has a large amount of money taken from a bust and no longer trust her.  She once was a close friend of Kate Burkholder, the chief of police in the Amish community so asks the Amish man to get her to come.  Kate the only one she can trust.

This book is pretty good.  It kept me wondering if Gina was going to get killed, escape, restore her friendship with Kate, or be sent to jail.  I also liked the predicament Kate was in from an ethical standpoint and how she kept wondering how best to help Gina.  When old memories came back, she analyzed how things could have been done differently.  (Karen's review, 4 stars)

Gerard's review:
In Outsider by Linda Castillo, Gina is a cop who was partners with Kate Burkholder and best friend at the police academy.  Gina is running for her life and hiding on an Amish farm.  Kate is not sure she can trust her because of Gina's dark past.  This was pretty good.  The storyline kept me engaged and it has an action-packed ending that I liked.  This is a light read that does not require much thinking.  (4 stars)

"Never Coming Home" by Hannah Mary McKinnon

In Never Coming Home, Lucas devises a plan to make sure he gets his wealthy wife's money.  Things are going well until he gets a message and he discovers someone is on to him.  But who?  Will his plan fall apart?  I thought this book was very good.  Enjoyed the story line, the characters, the writing and the surprise ending!  (Gerard's review, 5 stars)

"The Wolf and the Woodsman" by Ava Reid

In The Wolf and the Woodsman by Ava Reid, a wolf girl, Evike, and Gaspar, the woodsman, form an alliance to stop Gaspar's brother from taking over the crown!  I thought this fantasy novel was really really good!  I loved the byplay between Evike and Gaspar.  It has good action and the storyline kept me interested throughout!  I also liked the ending.  (Gerard's review, 5+ stars)

"The Wife Between Us" by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen

The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen has incorrectly been compared to Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train in my opinion.  I think it's laughable!  Those two books were way better!  The three main characters in this book are Richard, who has tons of money; Vanessa, who was his wife for a while; and Emma, his soon-to-be-wife.  This book had its moments, but needed more action for me.  The story line was okay and the ending was very good which surprised me!
(Gerard's review, 3.5 stars)

Karen's review:
The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen is a slow moving psychological thriller with twists I didn’t see coming. Richard appears to be the perfect husband, but when his “perfect” wife doesn’t meet his high expectations, he loses his temper. It’s almost as if he is two different people, very caring and affectionate at times, and then abusive and mean at other times. When Vanessa feels guilty about her manipulating, she actually tries to save Richard’s finance from marrying him.

This book was very slow moving for me about a bad marriage and the only reason I kept reading was because it was recommended to me by a friend. It does pick up and becomes more interesting eventually, but I had to plow my way through it. Some things just made no sense to me in the beginning. If you don’t mind a long road to a satisfying ending, then you would probably enjoy this one. If you prefer a fast-paced, action packed book with adventure and twists and turns, skip this one. It’s not for you. I only liked one character, Samantha, who was not a main one. (3 stars)

Teaser from page 19: Richard is engaged. My husband is actually going to marry her.

Teaser from page 10:  Morning is the worst time because, for a brief moment, my brain is clear.  The reprieve is so cruel.

"The Silent Patient" by Alex Michaelides

Wow! The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides is a shocking thriller about evil nature. At 33, Alicia Berenson killed her husband and became the silent patient who would not speak. She was put into a mental facility where none of the doctors could get her to talk, until Dr. Faber. Alicia is a painter and her husband a photographer. The story slowly unfolds and we don’t find out why Alicia killed her husband until the end. This kept my interest all the way through and I was pretty shocked by the ending. (Karen’s review, 4 stars)

Gerard's review 2/26/19:
In The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides, Alicia is a famous painter married to a successful husband.  Why then did she tie her husband to a chair and shoot him five times?  She never says another word!  Can she talk after that or is she just keeping quiet?  She is put in a mental hospital and is the "silent patient."  Theo is a criminal psychotherapist and wants to try to reach her and get the full story.  Can he do it?

Believe the hype around this one!  It is a NEW YORK TIMES best seller and movie rights already are in the works!  This is an adult novel.  The pacing of the book might seem slow, but it strings you along until the ending, then Bam!  Do not pass this one up, must read.  (5+ stars)

Teaser from page 35:  Her face was expressionless, blank.  A medicated mask.  I wondered what lay beneath.

"Wunderland" by Jennifer Cody Epstein

WOW!  What a fantastic book Wunderland by Jennifer Cody Epstein is to finish the month of April!  There are two main stories in this book:  (1)   Ilse and Renate are the two young girls and best of friends!  However, the infiltration with the Hitler youth movement will put that friendship to the test like nothing else would!  (2)  Things have never been easy between Ava and her estranged mother Ilse.  Ava has so many questions; however, when her mom's ashes arrive in a box from Germany and a bunch of letters addressed to Renate, Ava will learn the shocking story of her mom she never knew!

This is very good!  Ilse and Renate were both great characters!  I thought both of the stories were really well written and enjoyed this book a lot!  Believe the hype!  (Gerard's review, 5++ stars)

Teaser from page 39:  But Ava could only shake her head, overwhelmed not just by the gift but by the stark realization that for all her self-declared independence and self-sufficiency, for all her written protestations to her friends that she'd been "managing just fine" alone, she hadn't been.  Not at all.

"The Secret Keeper" by Kate Morton

The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton is a murder mystery, but not a who did it, but why did they?  On her younger brother's birthday, teen Laurel is hiding in her tree house and is the only one who sees her mother actually kill the strange man who came that knew her name.  She tells the cops what she saw, but not that her mother knew who he was.  It was concluded that her mom acted in self-defense because he was going to harm the baby brother who she was holding.  Years later, when Laurel was in her 50s and her mother was dying, Laurel decides to look into that event more closely to find out who that man was and why her mother killed him with the birthday knife they always used to cut the birthday cakes.  Through a long journey through photos, World War II letters, and a visit to London Laurel finally discovers the truth.

This story was really good; however, it seemed to take forever to get at it and finally arrive at the end.  I enjoyed story most when it was back during World War in London, showing the mother's background before marrying Laurel's father, Stephen.  I just found it hard to believe that Laurel was never that curious about her mother's background until she was dying.  I know, that's where the title comes in, but I thought it was far-fetched that Laurel would bother doing all that research instead of just asking her mother straight out.  I did not care for how the author went into so much detail describing scenery and jumping between all different years back and forth.  I loved the surprise ending.  This book really picked up around page 400.  I really enjoyed the last 80 pages or so--it saved the book for me.  It includes some discussion questions in the back for book clubs to use.
(Karen's review, 3 stars)

Teaser from page 28:  Both sisters turned towards her mighty indignation, and therefore neither noticed Dorothy's sharp intake of breath, the look of anguish that crossed her face at the mention of Vivien's name.  By the time the three Nicolsen sisters had gathered at their mother's side, Dorothy appeared to be sleeping calmly, her features giving no hint that she'd left behind the hospital, her weary body, and her grown daughters, slipping through time to the dark night of 1941.

"Convenient Lies" by Robin Patchen

Convenient Lies by Robin Patchen is book one in the Hidden Truth series. This is a page-turner thriller about Rae, a journalist, who discovers Julian, her husband, is a terrorist who already has a wife! But then, Rae had secrets from him as well. She decides to leave Julien with their 12-day-old son and go back to her grandma’s to get some gold coins her dad told her he hid for her, then disappear with her grandma. She stole some of her husband’s files for insurance, leaving him a note in the hopes that he would let her leave in exchange for her silence about his selling weapons to terrorists. She is thrown for a loop though when her plan unravels. Will she be able to keep her son safe and not let him be raised by a terrorist? Will she be able to start a new life? Will her old flame be able to win her back and build a life together? Will Julien track her down and what will he do when he finds her?

This is a good thriller because it mixed the terrorist with family life and brought out how complicated relationships can get. I enjoyed the story line and thought Julien was a very interesting character. I also liked Brady, Rae’s old flame and was pulling for him to find a way to protect her and get back together with her. I plan to continue with this series.
(Karen’s review, 5 stars)

"Reckless Disregard" by Robert Rotstein

Reckless Disregard by Robert Rotstein is a complex Hollywood mystery with lots of crazy characters. Basically, William Bishop, a pillar of the community sues Poniard, a video game designer, for defamation of character because in his video game, Abduction, Poniard implies that Bishop is responsible for the kidnapping and disappearance of Paul Felicity McGrath. The purpose of the game is to find out what actually happened. Poniard is a mystery too because no one actually knows who he is and he is intent on keeping his identity a secret, even to the point of refusing to appear for a deposition or make a court appearance! Parker Stern is a mediator who is drawn into this case as Poniard’s attorney and who has secrets of his own. This book has secret identities, betrayal and death.

This book is written in a very unique way, using the “game” to reflect what Poniard thinks really happened. There are a lot of surprises and twists and turns in the book which kept making it more puzzling. I felt that it was beyond believable though and was glad when I finished it. I did like the lawyer and the trial part. (Karen's review, 3 stars)

Teaser from page 35: I’ve spent the last twenty-five years trying to keep this secret. My celebrity almost ruined me, and I don’t want it back, not even a vestige of it. I’m a lawyer, not an actor.

"Everless" by Sara Holland--We Both Gave This 4 Stars

Everless by Sara Holland is her debut novel. It is a fantasy about mystery, magic, betrayal as Jules goes searching for an answer to why her father told her to never let the queen see her and to run if she ever saw Liam Gerling, once a childhood friend who banished her and her father from Everless. I liked Jules, but it didn’t make sense to me that she wouldn’t listen to her father and not go back to Everless, a dangerous place for her. She discovers her papa kept lots of secrets from her which leads to her searching for even more answers!

As with any fantasy, some things didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, but I enjoyed this book anyway. It has a lot of interesting characters and an angle I haven’t come across before with the blood iron—stealing people’s years of life by draining some blood from them. This was a hard concept for me to really understand. The character interaction is what kept my interest. I didn’t like that one of my favorite characters was killed.
(Karen’s review, 4 stars)

Gerard's review:
Everless by Sara Holland is fantasy and this author's first novel.  The concept was a new one that I have never read before.  It deals with blood and you can store it up to live longer.  The main character is a young girl named Jules who I liked.  I was engaged for the most part.  The ending was wild to say the least, but I liked it enough that I will read book 2--Evermore!  (4 stars)

Teaser from page 16: If I hadn’t pulled Roan out before the flames could catch, he would have been burned alive. And as my reward, we had to flee the only home I had ever known, because Papa was afraid of what Liam would do to me if we stayed at Everless, knowing what I had seen.

"Wildcard" by Marie Lu

Wildcard by Marie Lu is the follow up to Warcross.  Emike was able to escape from being killed in the Warcross games.  Now that she knows what hideo is up to, can she put a stop to it?  I enjoyed this book.  Emike is a wonderful character and there was plenty of action to be had.  The middle sort of dragged but the last part of the book more than made up for it!  It's not as good as Warcross, but readable to be sure.
(Gerard's review, 4 stars)

Teaser from page 18:  He pauses to look back at us.  "Okay with what?  That we're all sitting here, talking about the technicalities of how Emi should throw herself into a situation that might kill her?"

"Among the Wicked" by Linda Castillo

Among the Wicked by Linda Castillo is a story about Chief Kate Burkholder going undercover as an Amish women moving to Roaring Springs, New York.  She agrees to temporarily join the community to try to get evidence about some nasty rumors about the Bishop and look into the suspicious death of a 15-yr.-old girl that was found dead of hypothermia in the woods near where she was living.   Kate is determined to see through the assignment in spite of being in very serious danger and Tomasetti's objections.

I enjoyed this book but once again, typical of Linda Castillo's Amish mysteries, Kate Burkholder bravely solves the mystery with near death experience.  She is brave but not too bright.  Kate's escape from death is hard to believe.
(Karen's review, 4 stars)

WOW!  This book is so good!  All the characters were very well developed.  The story line is believable and the twists and turns in this book will make your head spin!  Do not miss this one!

"Nyxia Unleashed" by Scott Reintgen (We Both Loved This One)

Nyxia Unleashed by Scott Reintgen is the follow up to Nyxia.   Emmett and the rest of the Genesis 11 and 12 must now explore a new planet and collect Nyxia for Babel.  I enjoyed this book much more than the first one!  There is lots more action for one thing and I liked how the author had new stuff coming up.  I never really knew what was going to happen next!  The ending was full of action and I look forward to the third and final book in this series to see how it all plays out.
(Gerard's review, 5++ stars)

Karen's review:
Nyxia Unleashed by Scott Reintgen is book 2 in the Nyxia series that I am loving!  This book picks up where the last one left off as Genesis 11 and 12 land on Eden.  The world building is phenomenal but left me slightly confused.

I really enjoyed all the humor in this book and that the two "teams" really became one and worked together against Babel who was lying to them the entire time.  I felt very bad when two of the group died.  There were some surprises and twists and kept turning pages to see what was going to happen next.  The thing I really didn't understand was that only one shipment of Nyxia got sent back and no one even questioned it.  I thought that was odd.  I was also a bit confused as to what Jacqueline Requin was doing on Eden as a queen or whatever--at least she had a lot of authority.  This series is so awesome, a very interesting read that I couldn't put down.  I am so disappointed that I have to wait until next year for the last book--UGH!  I have so many unanswered questions!  I liked this one as much as the first, if not more.  I highly recommend this series.
(5 stars)

Teaser from page 20:  The blood's soaking through his uniform.  Azima holds a rag to the thing, trying to stop it.  This isn't exactly the welcome we expected on Eden.

"Blood Song" by Anthony Ryan--Husband Loved It, Wife Hated It!

In Blood Song by Anthony Ryan, Vaelin is only ten when his father takes him to join the sixth order.  The sixth Order is devoted to battle to protect the realm and the faith!  The book is told by the point of view of Vaelin.  I really enjoyed the first part of the book when he goes through training exercises with his band of brothers.  There is good action in this book with some twists that surprised me.  At 575 pages, this is no light read to say the least, but I was caught up in it and pretty much enjoyed it all!
(Gerard's review, 5++ stars)

Karen's review, 4/25/18:
Blood Song by Anthony Ryan is like a marathon; I was so glad when I finally finished it! This is a fantasy that I really did not like much at all—only a few parts. It’s about Vaelien who is sent to the Sixth Order to learn to kill, supposedly to defend the faith and the realm. Part I was the best in my opinion, and then it went downhill from there. It is filled with fighting, murder, betrayal, and war.

Here are the few things I liked:
1) The training at the Sixth Order.
2) Vaelien’s relationship with sister Sherin, Snowdance (a huge cat that was in it very little).
3) Vaelien’s Valarian slave-hound named Scratch, and his horse named Spit.

Here are the things I did not like:
1) The writing was hard to follow because it kept going back and forth from present to past and often I had to reread passages to figure out who was speaking.
2) Too many characters and then some even were called by several different names!
3) Characters I really liked got killed.
4) The names were hard to remember.
5) I had a hard time understanding how the magic worked.
6) The whole plot was hard for me to follow.
7) Lots of different countries to keep straight and I didn’t really understand what the war was all about—it made no sense to me.
8) The ending was horrible! I felt so let down and that I wasted so much time reading this.  The only good part of the ending was when he let Spit run free!

I know I am in the minority on this book, it got lots of very good reviews. However, I was extremely disappointed in it and therefore give it just 2 stars. I will not be continuing on with this series.

Teaser from pg. 29:  "Your first day in the Order is over," he told them.  "It is a rule of the Order that you can leave in the morning if you wish.  It will only get harder from now on so think carefully."
