How to Age Disgracefully by Clare Pooley is about a handful of older people who band together to stop their senior center from being shut down. I enjoyed it! I liked the characters and it was funny at times too. The story line kept the book moving along and there is even a dog in it which always is a good thing! This is an enjoyable, light read. 100 Tricks to Appear Smart in Meetings by Sarah Cooper
100 Tricks to Appear Smart in Meetings by Sarah Cooper is a little book with pictures full of silly tricks to do in meetings. It is definitely a gag gift but is humorous. I enjoyed it, being a person who hates meetings. I would recommend this to anyone who runs meetings or has to attend them.

"The Unwinding of the Miracle" by Julie Yip-Williams
The Unwinding of the Miracle by Julie Yip-Williams is the true story of how Julie overcame so much. She was born blind in Vietnam. Her grandmother wanted her killed just two days after she was born. With 300 other people in a boat, she made it to Hong Kong and then America where she attended Harvard and became a very good lawyer. She married and had two daughters. But unfortunately, she could not overcome colon Cancer. She wrote this book for her daughters to remember her.
Julie tells her story and pulls no punches. There is some humor also. Rest in peace, Julie. Job well done! (Gerard's review, 5+ stars)
Teaser from page 8: But also as your mother, I want you to feel the pain, to live it, embrace it, and then learn from it. Be stronger people because of it, for you will know that you carry my strength within you.

"The Fall of Crazy House" by James Patterson and Gabrielle Charbonnet
The Fall of Crazy House by James Patterson and Gabrielle Charbonnet is the sequel to Crazy House that continues on with Becca, Cassie, Tim, and Nate being trained as soldiers in the resistance. It’s a pretty wild book that contains some humor, lots of adventure and action. The ending though left me a bit confused about who Helen Strepp actually is. It also was very hard to believe many death defying feats of the main characters. All in all though, it was an interesting read that kept me turning pages and wanting more. I think this was as good as the first book, if not better!
(Karen’s review, 4 stars)
Teaser from page 68: “MCDONALD’S FRENCH FRIES,” I typed into the log. The small white box was flattened and oil-stained. There was no way to tell what year it was from, or where. Or who McDonald was.

"Oregon Discovery" (Trails of the Heart Book 4) by Rachel Wesson
In Oregon Discovery by Rachel Wesson, we meet Tilly and her friend, Fiona, who was her servant. This book has highs and lows. Lots of death, but also a reunion and a wedding. This book jumps a few years with the children in the previous book now in their teens and centers on Almanzo. Tilly is engaged to a much older man, Richard, that her father has chosen for her. The man is despicable and Tilly is determined never to marry him!
I enjoyed this book and look forward to finishing this series. Almanzo is a great character who has both sadness and happiness in his life in this book. My favorite part was when Fiona and Tilly were held at the Indian camp where Red Wing took care of them and where Tilly was called "Fire Daughter" because of her hot temper. This is an entertaining historical read I would recommend, but only after reading the previous books in this series.
(Karen's review, 5 stars)
Teaser from Kindle Loc. 84-86: "He believes women should look decorative. Our sole aim in life is to please our menfolk and produce an heir. Anything else is against God's wishes." Tilly's face screwed up as she repeated what her father had drummed into her for as long as she could remember.

"Nyxia Unleashed" by Scott Reintgen (We Both Loved This One)
Nyxia Unleashed by Scott Reintgen is the follow up to Nyxia. Emmett and the rest of the Genesis 11 and 12 must now explore a new planet and collect Nyxia for Babel. I enjoyed this book much more than the first one! There is lots more action for one thing and I liked how the author had new stuff coming up. I never really knew what was going to happen next! The ending was full of action and I look forward to the third and final book in this series to see how it all plays out.
(Gerard's review, 5++ stars)
Karen's review:
Nyxia Unleashed by Scott Reintgen is book 2 in the Nyxia series that I am loving! This book picks up where the last one left off as Genesis 11 and 12 land on Eden. The world building is phenomenal but left me slightly confused.
I really enjoyed all the humor in this book and that the two "teams" really became one and worked together against Babel who was lying to them the entire time. I felt very bad when two of the group died. There were some surprises and twists and kept turning pages to see what was going to happen next. The thing I really didn't understand was that only one shipment of Nyxia got sent back and no one even questioned it. I thought that was odd. I was also a bit confused as to what Jacqueline Requin was doing on Eden as a queen or whatever--at least she had a lot of authority. This series is so awesome, a very interesting read that I couldn't put down. I am so disappointed that I have to wait until next year for the last book--UGH! I have so many unanswered questions! I liked this one as much as the first, if not more. I highly recommend this series.
(5 stars)
Teaser from page 20: The blood's soaking through his uniform. Azima holds a rag to the thing, trying to stop it. This isn't exactly the welcome we expected on Eden.

"Everwild" by Neal Shusterman (Skinjacker series book 2)
Everwild by Neal Shusterman is the 2nd book in the Skinjacker series. In this book, a lot of new characters are introduced. I enjoyed Moose and Squirrel the best! This book started out good with Allie the Outcast and Mikey as the main story line; however, then it got into a bunch of story lines and I did not know who was good and who was bad. I thought the ending was okay. I am in no hurry to read book 3 though!
(Gerard's review, 3.5 stars)
Karen's review, 5 stars:
Everwild by Neal Shusterman, book 2 of the Skinjacker trilogy, is as good as the first. Ally finds her parents in the real world and skinjacks a 7-yr-old boy that was pretty funny. Milos leaves Ally and sides with Mary Hightower who also has Jackin Jill with her. Mikey continues to stew about losing Ally, but is reunited with her temporarily when she is on her way to warn Nick about Mary's plans. Poor Nick runs into a major problem of his own! There is lots of action in this book and the plots thicken. I loved it and laughed out loud at some parts! Can't wait to move on to book 3 and see how it all turns out! I highly recommend this series, but read Everlost first or this book won't make much sense to you.
Teaser from page 8: "I'd still rather be alive," Speedo would say whenever she spoke of how blessed they were to be here in Everlost.
"If I had lived," Mary would remind him, "I'd be long dead by now . . . and you'd probably be a fat, bald accountant."
STOP READING HERE UNLESS YOU HAVE READ THIS BOOK--SPOILER ALERT!
IF YOU READ THIS BOOK, PERHAPS YOU COULD EXPLAIN A FEW THINGS TO ME:

IF YOU READ THIS BOOK, PERHAPS YOU COULD EXPLAIN A FEW THINGS TO ME:
- When Ally was trying to get into her parents house, why didn't she just walk through the wall or the door, staying in Everlost but being able to see them? OR
- Why didn't she skinjack her parents so she could talk directly to them?
- I didn't get why Mary turned back to alive just because she went into the real world. Was it only skinjackers that could go into both worlds? Maybe I missed something.
- Why did Nick keep getting more chocolatey? Was it just because he was made more aware of it when other afterlights started referring to him as the Chocolate Ogre?
- I wondered why Mikey didn't go with Allie to help her save Nick.

"Everlost" by Neal Shusterman (Book 1 of the Skinjacker Trilogy)
Everlost by Neal Shusterman is the entertaining first book of the Skinjacker trilogy. Nick and Allie both die in a head on collision and wind up in Everlost, a limbo between the real world and the final afterlife destination where they become ghosts called “afterlights.” They first wake up 9 months after the crash and see a kid who doesn’t know his name and is also an afterlife living in a forest. Nick and Allie name him Lief. Allie is determined to get back home and soon take the lead. Nick is just baffled and follows Allie. Lief feels protective of them and so follows after them even though he is content to stay living in the forest. He tried talking them into staying with him, but they didn’t want to. Everlost is a weird place—Afterlights who live there do not need to sleep, can’t feel pain, and are invisible to those in the real world. There are “dead spots” that are safe for them to sit or stand still on but if they get off, the must keep moving or they will sink into the ground towards the center of the earth! There is much to learn about Everlost!
Teaser from page 18: Nick kept rubbing his face. "This chocolate--I can't get it off my face. It's kind of tattooed there." "It is," Lief said. "It's how you died."
This got my attention right from the start and kept my interest with lots of surprises along the way. The world building is very well done. This was a very unique read for me, haven’t read anything like this before so I enjoyed it very much. I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next! I liked the action, adventure, humor and learning about the world of Everlost. I liked how the relationship between Mary, the Queen of Snots, and Nick developed into something unexpected. This has lots of interesting characters: the McGill, the Haunted, the bullies, Vari, and Pinhead. There actually were four main characters in this book: Allie, Nick, Mary and The McGill. This is a good read for fantasy lovers!
(Karen’s review, 5 stars)
Gerard's review, 4 stars:
Nick and Allie are in a limbo land called Everlost in this Neal Shusterman YA fantasy. Their souls are there but with bodies of a sort too. Everlost is run by a woman named Mary who takes care of children who wind up at her home. There is a monster called "the McGill" who you do not want to mess with! Allie wants no part of this and comes up with a plan to get out, but can she?
This book was pretty good. It started off slow for me, but I enjoyed the last part of the book much better. Book 2 should be good!

"Sparks of Light" by Janet B. Taylor
Sparks of Light by Janet B. Taylor is the sequel to Into the Dim. The mission is different but it gets off to the same slow start. The trip back in time is to New York City during the Victorian era so I was thinking, how much trouble could they get into there. Well, Hope manages to get locked up in a mental institution along with Doug! The timeslippers have a much bigger part in this book.
Teaser from page 364:
I liked Into the Dim better than this one because I really didn't have a good understanding of what exactly their mission was in this and really didn't care. I was interested to see how Hope and Doug would get out of their predicament. The thing I did like most about this one was the development of Bran and Collum's friendship. I got a bit confused on a couple of the characters and was glad when I finished it. I still liked Hope's sarcasm and one again, she proved to be very brave and useful. If there is more to this series, I do not intend to read it.

Teaser from page 364:
I was nobody's physical threat. My normal means of causing people injury generally involved me tripping and falling on them.

"Into the Dim" by Janet B. Taylor - Husband and Wife Agree on this one!
Into the Dim is about Hope Walton, a home-schooled girl from a small town, who travels back in time to bring back her mother from the 12th century who she thought was dead, but who just traveled back in time! This book is a wild one! She meets Bran Cameron on the moors of Scotland while visiting her aunt, and then finds out he traveled back in time too to the same place she did!
This started out slow and was a bit silly and confusing for the first 100 pages or so. I considered giving up on it but I am glad I stuck with it and gave it a chance. This is a very entertaining read with Hope's sarcasm and wit and a roller coaster ride of ups and downs. Just when it seems their plans are going well, they find themselves in danger and situations that seem hopeless, until they get some help from unexpected sources. This is the first book of the series and I look forward to starting the sequel tomorrow.
(Karen's review, 9/2/17, 4 stars)
Gerard's review (5+ stars, 9/6/17):
Hope Walton is at her mom's funeral and if that isn't bad enough, now her dad wants to send her to Scotland to live with an aunt she never met while he goes on vacation with another woman! When Hope gets to Scotland, she finds some news that will send her on the adventure of her life!
Teaser from page 42: My jeans wicked up the frigid water as I splashed through the shallows toward him. His head lay cocked at an angle that hid his face.
The start of this book was kind of slow and I had a hard time getting into it; however, then it came into focus and I really enjoyed it a lot! The main characters are really good and east to root for! There is good action that kept me engaged with a good ending that made me look forward to book, Sparks of Light!

Loved "The One" (Book 3 of The Selection Series) by Kiera Cass
The One by Kiera Cass is the third book in The Selection series and my favorite so far! In this the action really picks up, Maxon and Aspen form a bond, America's father dies, Maxon finally chooses his princess and it has some surprises and several die. This is like a roller coaster with happy moments and very sad moments. My emotions were all over the place. The relationship developments, the danger at the palace, the plot with the rebels and Maxon's father continuing to knock America out of the competition made this book hard for me to put down.
I am loving this series and so glad I gave it a chance despite the boring covers. I like both Maxon and America and loved the ending of this one even though it was not what I expected! I am flying through these books because I am enjoying the characters so much. What a great book, loving this series!

"A Court of Mist and Fury" by Sarah J. Maas is FANTASTIC!
Wow! A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas is so good! This is the second book in A Court of Thorns and Roses series and is even better than the first! This review has some spoilers so read the book first and then come see what I thought of it. Definitely must read the first book before this one. If you like fantasy and magical kingdoms, this is a "must read." (This would be R rated for sexual content.)
SPOILER ALERT: Feyre pretty much tells Tamlin to “jump in the lake” and chooses to stay with Rys who is her mate and challenges Feyre to use her skills. This book is full of new adventures with lots of wit and packed with both heartbreaking and heartwarming scenes and lots of good dialogue. I like all the characters in Rys’ inner circle and loved their trip to the Summer Court and how the wraiths came to save Feyre and Amren from drowning. I cheered when Feyre served Rys the food in the cabin, accepting the bond as mates. The ending is Great and I can't wait for the next book!
I was having a hard time deciding on my favorite read for December until I read this one which is the winner! (Karen's review, 5 stars)
Gerard read this first, 6-15-16:
A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas is the follow-up book to A Court of Thorns and Roses and is like ten times better than the first one! Feyre survived Amarantha's clutches to return to spring court, but at a high cost. She still has the bargain with Rhysard.
Wow, oh Wow! I really liked the characters, the writing and the action which all work together to make the story flow well. The ending is probably the best I have ever read! I want book 3 NOW!

(5++ stars)

"The Kiss of Deception" by Mary E. Pearson - Fantastic Fantasy (UPDATED)
The Kiss of Deception Mary E. Pearson is about a young girl who is promised in marriage to a prince to keep the peace between the two lands. However, at the last minute, Princess Arabella aka Lia takes off! She wants no part of this at all!
This book has pretty good action. Lia is a fantastic character and the parts of the book that feature her were the best. The two primary male characters, Kaden and Rafe are interesting also. This is a good read, the first of the series. On to book 2! (Gerard's review, 12/6/16, 5 stars)
Karen's review 4/30/15, 5 stars:
The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson is about ancient far-away lands in a world of fantasy kingdoms. The main character, Princess Arabella Celestine Idris Jezelia, First Daughter of the House of Morrighan a/k/a Lia, the one named in secret, is not your average princess! She is only 17 and quite a rebel who runs away on her wedding day because she does not want to marry someone who she never has seen or met just to be part of her father’s plan to form an alliance with another kingdom. The jolted prince is greatly insulted so seeks to find her along with her father’s bounty hunters and an assassin from the barbaric kingdom of Venda. She just wants to live a normal quiet life and be loved by someone for who she is.

This was a nice change of pace for me. I liked this book a lot because Lia is such a feisty
princess. The book has humor, action, mystery and clean romance.
The writes the story in first person by alternating chapters among the
perspectives of three different people: the princess, the assassin and
the prince who are all complex characters. The chapters are plainly titled when the prince or assassin
are speaking and the untitled chapters are when the princess is speaking.
In the beginning though, it is a bit confusing as to who Rafe and Kadin are—one
is the prince and one is the assassin, but it took me a while to figure out
which was which. What I thought turned out to be wrong when I read on a bit farther. On the inside the cover is a map of the various locations of
the different kingdoms which is helpful to the reader. This is the
first book in The Remnant Chronicles series and now I have to look for the second one--The Heart of Betrayal!

"Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire" by J. K. Rowling is Fantastic!
This is the fourth book in the Harry Potter series. The main story is the Triwizard tournament in this one. This book started out kind of slow for me--I did not really get into it until after the first 100 pages. It is a long book though (734 pages) so with my wife's encouragement, I kept reading and am glad I did. I did not think there was much interaction between the kids as I would have liked. I was hoping for more Quidditch games. However, the tournament was good, especially the last challenge! What I really enjoyed was when HArry and Voldemort had a battle. That was like "WOW"! I could hardly turn the pages fast enough! That more than saved the book for me--on to Number 5!

Karen's review 10/14/15, 5 stars:
Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire is the fourth book in this series which kept me turning pages. It is full of mystery, excitement, adventure, humor and suspense! The beginning is kind of light with Harry getting to attend the World Quidditch match with the Weasleys and Fred and George Weasley have a bigger role in this book. They add a bit of fun to the story! Hermione was even getting on my nerves with her campaign to free the house elves. I really was surprised Ron took so long to ask her to the dance. Harry is chosen by the Goblet of Fire to enter the champion inter-school competition in spite of his age. Someone secretly entered his name but why? Talk about unexpected twists and turns? This book has them! How is that reporter getting her information and how is Hermione going to get her revenge? When Harry is entered into the interschool Triwizard Tournament, his friends help him prepare for the tasks. I did not guess who entered Harry’s name even after I learned why someone did it. Near the end when Harry was in major danger fighting for his life, I felt so sorry for him.
I loved this book and especially enjoyed the dog visit at the end! I was sad when Ron and Harry weren’t speaking but loved how the friendship between them and Hermione further developed in this book. Goblet of Fire made me laugh but also kept me wondering what was going to happen next. I highly recommend this series, the creativity and writing is amazing! It is very entertaining.

"November 9" by Colleen Hoover--a WOW Romance (We Both Liked This One!)
November 9 by Colleen Hoover I really a captivating romance novel. From the beginning, I figured Fallon and Ben would get together but what a journey they have! They meet when they are 18 on November 9 at a restaurant when Ben pretends to be her boyfriend, slides in next to her and joins in the conversation she is having with her father about her going to New York. Her father is trying to discourage her from going back to acting and Ben defends her and encourages her to go for it in spite of the scars she has from being in a fire. Ben and Fallon agree to meet again on November 9, same time, same place for the next 5 years and see where things go. However, they also do not exchange phone numbers and block each other on all the social media sites so they cannot have any contact except on November 9.
The witty dialogue and the alternate points of view allowing the reader to know what each of the main characters is thinking makes November 9 a very fun read! I enjoyed the book very much and liked both Fallon and Ben, but I liked Ben better (Fallon seemed kind of slutty and mean to me). I thought Fallon had a tendency to over react and was a bit mean at times by not giving Ben a chance to explain himself. As I read, something seemed off with Ben which provided some mystery and the surprise twist in the book! I was so glad that this book moved along to all their November 9 meetings rather than showed us what they were both up to all year long. I also liked their book discussions and how the author developed and organized this novel in such a cool way. For me, the swearing throughout was a big turn off to me and I also did not care for the premarital sex scenes and how quickly Fallon allowed Ben to paw her up. Because of that, I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5.
(Karen's review, 4 stars)
November 9 starts off with Fallon Having an argument with her father in a restaurant. Ben over hears and takes it upon himself to enter and sit with Fallon and aid her in the discussion. If I say anything else, it would spoil it for you. What I can say is that this book is FANTASTIC! In my opinion, it is Colleen Hoover's best book! The characters of Ben and Fallon are so good! The writing is easy to follow and flows along nicely leading to the twists and turns near the end. WOW! I felt a lot of emotion in this book for both Ben and Fallon. This is absolutely a "Must Read" I highly recommend! There is so much to discuss about this one too!
(Gerard's review 8/3/16, 5++ stars)
We also liked SLAMMED and CONFESS by Colleen Hoover.
Here is my favorite Booktuber's review of this that really got me interested in it:

"The Lost and Found" by Katrina Leno
The Lost and Found by Katrina Leno is a story about Frannie and Louis. They met at a very young age in an online support group for trauma survivors. They have never met face-to-face; but due to a set of circumstances, they do just that. This was a nice story that flowed very well. I enjoyed both of the main characters and the good ending! I was bothered though, that I had to hold the book upside down to read it and it went from the back to the front—very strange! The library put the book jacket on upside down!

"Highly Illogical Behavior" by John Corey Whaley
Highly Illogical Behavior by John Corey Whaley centers on three teens: (1) Solomon who has not left his house in three years and sees no reason to; (2) Lisa who has big plans to get into an exclusive school; and (3) Clark, who is Lisa's boyfriend but would like to be more.
Lisa's plans include Solomon, but she does not let him know that. When she decides to get Clark's help, things get really interesting.
I enjoyed this book. I thought the story line was good and I enjoyed all three characters. I also had an unexpected ending I was glad to see.

"The Decent Proposal" by Kemper Donovan--Contemporary Mystery/Romance
The Decent Proposal by Kemper Donovan is a unique love story with an element of mystery that takes place in L.A. Richard and Elizabeth both get a decent proposal by an attorney representing an anonymous client. They are complete strangers. Richard is a film producer fallen on hard times, likes to party and has a best friend Michaela (Mike). Elizabeth is a successful attorney without friends except for a homeless man named Orpheus. The proposal is that if they spend two consecutive hours talking to each other one day a week for a year, they would both be given half a million dollars each at the end of the year! Who wouldn’t accept an offer like that?
I do not want to spoil anything, so will just mention the questions that came up as I was reading, such as: (1) Will Richard and Elizabeth fall in love? (2) Why were they chosen? (3) Who is behind the proposal? (4) How will they spend the money if they succeed? Even Richard and Elizabeth couldn’t come up with a common acquaintance that might have been trying to match them up.
The mystery in this book is what kept my attention more than the characters. There is some foul language and a lot of drinking episodes I did not care for, but the plot was interesting. Another thing that bothered me was the girl called Mike. I had to keep reminding myself it was the girl. Overall, I’m glad I read this novel and thought the author wrapped things up in a very unique way. It was witty and had a lot of references to movies and books which I enjoyed.

"Fired Up--Trouble in Texas, Book 2" by Mary Connealy
Fired Up –Trouble in Texas, Book 2 by Mary Connealy continues with Paul warning Dare to stay away from his mother and several attempts to kill Dare. The friends continue to pull together to guard Dare and figure out who is trying to kill him while Dare and Glynna take next steps in their relationship in spite of Paul’s warnings.
I enjoyed this western historical romance and particularly liked the humor surrounding the diner and Glynna’s cooking. I also liked that Paul was so protective of his widowed mother. It is a light, enjoyable read with an ending I loved and I look forward to continuing with the series. (Karen's review, 4 stars)
