"What An Owl Knows" by Jennifer Ackerman

What An Owl Knows by Jennifer Ackerman is a true story about owls.  I learned a lot about owls reading this book and bet you would learn a lot too.  Here are just a few of the interesting facts I learned:

1. Keeping an owl as a pet is against the law in the U.S.
2. Owls sometimes attack people.
3. An owl can kill and eat a baby fawn.  

I enjoyed this book because I found it interesting.  It was fun to read how people can interact with owls.  (Gerard's review, 5 stars)

"Sophie Last Seen" by Marlene Adelstein

Sophie Last Seen by Marlene Adelstein is a good read about Jesse and her journey to overcome her grief caused when her 6-yr-old daughter disappeared from a store. Jesse feels like it was all her fault. Sophie, the little girl, was obsessed with birds and always wore her binoculars so she could watch them closely. She had a box full of little trinkets that crows brought to her and loved routine. She was mad at her best friend, Star, That Day she disappeared because Star had promised to go with her to the mall but then changed her mind. When Sophie disappeared, Star felt guilty too, thinking if she had gone That Day, things may have been different. Jesse never stopped looking for her daughter, even though people thought she was strange.

This is a good story that shows how differently people deal with grief and guilt. It was also a mystery figuring out what happened to Sophie. I enjoyed the information about birds that was imparted through the story as well as Saint Anthony, Jesse’s dog who became her faithful companion. I really enjoyed Jesse’s journey from being a total self-absorbed wreck to a person who thinks of others and is ready for a fresh start. "H Is for Hawk" by Helen MacDonald"

H Is for Hawk by Helen MacDonald tells a true story and what a story it is!  Helen is trying to deal with the unexpected passing of her father.  She has always had an interest in hawks and falcons that she picked up from her dad.  She decides to try to tame a Goshawk--a pretty hard if not next to impossible task!  She named it Mabel.

My favorite parts of this book is when she trains and connects with the hawk, not that other parts were bad though, far from it!

"Wild Within" by Melissa Hart is Educational

Wild Within--How Rescuing Owls Inspired a Family by Melissa Hart is a non-fiction story.  One day, Melissa takes her dogs to a dog park and makes friends with a guy named Jonathan.  He works at a raptor rehab center and invites her to join him.  I loved this book because Melissa tells the story so well and I learned a lot about owls and raptors that I didn’t know before.  This book kept me interested and entertained.  Put it on your TBR list—you will be glad you did!  The ending is just fantastic!

"The Eagle Christian" by Kenneth Price

The Eagle Christian by Kenneth Price is a short read all about Eagles and how Christians are like them.  I enjoyed the photographs of eagles the most.  It contains many interesting facts about eagles as well, the king of birds.  There are 16 chapters each talking about one characteristic.

"All God’s Creatures—Spiritual Lessons From The Animals Of The Bible" by Gary Richmond

This is a "must read" for animal lovers!

All God’s Creatures—Spiritual Lessons From The Animals Of The Bible by Gary Richmond is a fun and interesting read. The author imparts a variety of characteristics and interesting facts about the animals mentioned in the Bible which makes for a greater understanding of the verses. He also shares some fantastic stories relating to the animals from his personal experiences as a zookeeper and veterinarian’s assistant. For example, he shared about the time he was cleaning the bear exhibit and the bear opened the gate and let the other bears in with him, or the time a deer jumped into the lion exhibit and the time he pet a lion. I love animals so enjoyed this book very much.

All God’s Creatures also makes for some good background material when studying certain Bible passages or verses that mention animals. It is a quick, easy read that is organized with separate chapters for each animal. I could easily skip around and read the animals I was most interested in first. I shared about the lion and the wolf in a ladies’ Bible study class and got very positive feedback afterward. I recommend it to all animal lovers and anyone who is interested in the Bible. It certainly shows God’s amazing work throughout the animal kingdom. Now I want to go back and take notes or mark it up! This is one I own.

"Okay For Now" by Gary D. Schmidt

Okay For Now by Gary D. Schmidt is about Doug, a 14-yr.-old who is upset about moving to a new town and leaving his friends. The story takes place in 1968 during the Vietnam War that Doug’s oldest brother is fighting in. He also has an older brother, who gets great pleasure from picking on him and an abusive father. Doug’s idol is the Yankee ballplayer, Joe Pepitone and a signed jacket by Joe is Doug’s most prized possession. Doug narrates about his high and low points as he goes through adjusting to the new town and with the help of several caring people, he actually gets to like it. When he sees a beautiful bird book in the library, he is drawn to it and the librarian encourages him to draw the different birds. Art becomes his passion and he likens how he feels to how he thinks some of those birds feel. It’s a well-written book that gives the reader insight into the feelings of a young teenage boy. It’s a good read that I think any teen could relate to and enjoy.
