Faceless by Alyssa Sheinmel is about Maisie, a junior in high school. She runs track and is so good her coach told her she could get a scholarship. While running one morning, she has a terrible accident. When she wakes up, she learns that she has been in the hospital for a very long time and has lost part of her face! She is able to get a face transplant but now when she wakes up, she sees a stranger in the mirror. How she handles that, her family, school and her friends makes up this book. I liked this book much more than I thought I would. Maisie was a very good character. I thought the story line moved well and I loved the ending! The other people in this book were well developed too. (Gerard's review, 5 stars)

"Deadly Echoes" by Nancy Mehl was Disappointing
Deadly Echoes by Nancy Mehl is about two sisters, Hannah and Sarah, whose parents were murdered but the case was closed saying it was a burglary gone awry. The girls got separated and when the older girl was 18, she tried to get the cops to re-open the case and look at it as a murder. Then years later, Hannah is murdered and there are similarities to her parents' murder which the younger sister, Sarah, sees and then once again, the case is closed with it classified as a burglary and the burglar hanging himself in jail. Sarah, who is a single school teacher in a rural community, becomes the guardian of Cicely, Hannah's ten-yr.-old daughter who was at a sleepover when her mother was killed.
I had high hopes for this book but was disappointed in the writing. It moved along very slowly, the only suspense was at the very end and I had figured out who the murder was. This is one of those Christian fiction books that just was not well developed and I didn't care for it. There was a self-esteem theme running through it; however, it fell flat for me. I finished it but just having read two really good books, this was a big let down. If you like a slow moving, kind of cozy mystery, then you may like this one.

"Building Your Mate's Self-Esteem" by Dennis & Barbara Rainey
Building Your Mate’s Self Esteem by Dennis and Barbara Rainey is for both husbands and wives and provides some practical suggestions based on scripture for building self-esteem in your mate with familiar quotes tossed in. At the end of each chapter is a suggested thought provoking activity to do that helps you put into practice the principles given in the chapter.
There is a lot more “meat” in this book than I thought there would be and several things really stood out to me such as (1) accepting our mates unconditionally as God’s gift to us; (2) be generous with heartfelt praise; (3) encourage mate to develop close friendship with same gender and find another couple you and your spouse can become friends with; (4) seek to do specific things that please your mate; (5) encourage mate’s positive talk about himself and encourage him to avoid even thinking negative thoughts.
This book served as a good reminder to me on how to be good wife. It’s easy to let day-to-day responsibilities take over in a marriage to the extent romance and fun is neglected. Married couples should still act as though they are competing for their mate or familiarity can lead to boredom that can cause a marriage to fall apart should one of the couple choose to search elsewhere for something better. I recommend this book to any couple!

"Safe In His Arms" by Colleen Coble is a Christian Cowboy Romance About A Woman With Low Self-Esteem
Get that book off my cat tree! |
This is a Christian fiction romance with action and suspense set in the old west. Coleen Coble is a best-selling author but this is the first book I read by her. Daniel and Margaret make a good team and Daniel helps her to trust in God more. This is a light cowboy love story that I enjoyed.
