"Beneficence" by Meredith Hall

Beneficence by Meredith Hall is about the Senter family who owns a dairy farm in Maine.  They are very close and happy until tragedy strikes and their 14-yr-old son dies, leaving them with only a younger son and a daughter.  Most of the book is centered around how each blame themselves and how time brings healing.  I plowed through this slow moving book because I cared about the characters, although it was a sad story.  I liked the ending and was glad when I finished it.  There are questions at the end for a book club discussion.  I wouldn't recommend reading this one though.  (Karen's review, 2 stars)

"Funny Farm--Life with 600 Rescue Animals" by Laurie Zaleski

Funny Farm by Lauri Zaleski is the true story of her childhood and her mom who had a love for animals.  Throughout the book we learn about some of the animals she had on her farm.  I really enjoyed reading this one very much.  What a story Laurie tells so well.  If you are looking for a "feel good" story, this is it!  (Gerard's review, 5++ stars)

"The Girl with the Broken Heart" by Lurlene McDaniel

In The Girl with the Broken Heart by Lurlene McDaniel, Kenzie's second year of college comes to a close.  Instead of going home, she heads off to work at a horse farm to take care of three horses!  She has her reasons.  Austin, who has secrets comes into the picture to help Kenzie with the horses.

I enjoyed this book!  Kenzie and Austin were really good characters.  The book had good pacing so I really could not figure out the whole story.  I had this book at 5 stars, but the ending par pushed it up to a 5++ stars, my highest rank!  I recommend this one to anyone who likes Hallmark movies--good read.

The Girl with the Broken Heart is a teen romance between Kenzie, a college girl with a heart issue and Austin, the guy who was her helper in caring for rescue horses during one summer. Austin finds himself falling in love with her even though he tries not to. He has secrets he does not want to share.

This book is okay. Kenzie and Austin’s feelings are developed slowly which makes their relationship very believable. I liked that there are no sex scenes in this book. Although there are sad events, the writing did not touch my emotions. I thought this was pretty ho-hum but enjoyed the horse part of the story. (3 stars)

"The Education of Will" by Patricia B. McConnell

The Education of Will by Patricia B. McConnell is a true story.  Patricia lives on a farm with sheep and a sheep dog to help her.  That is where Willie, her dog, comes into the picture.  You really get two stories as the author bares her soul about the stuff she has been through in her life.  I enjoyed the parts of the book with her training Willie and their day-to-day life together.  I enjoyed this book!

"The Buried Book" by D. M. Pulley is Quite The Mystery! (UPDATED)

The Buried Book by D. M. Pulley takes place in the 1950s and is primarily about 9-yr.-old Jasper searching for his mother who was involved with some very bad men!  One day she just drops him off at his uncle's farm and leaves without saying where she was going or when she would be back. The poor kid misses her terribly and the book he finds in her old house gives him some ideas on where to start looking.

I thought this was really good because it kept my curiosity up wondering what happened to his mother and if he would ever see her again.  The title chapters also were pretty clever and wasn't sure who it was that was being interrogated.  I felt very bad for poor Jasper.  I thought it moved a little slow though and did not care for all the swearing in it.

In The Buried Book by D. M. Pulley,  9-yr.-old Jasper lives with his parents in Detroit.  His parents are not exactly hands on.  One day Jasper's mom takes him to his uncle and aunt's farm, leaving him there.  Now, Jasper has problems.  He has never lived on a farm and doesn't know when or if his mom is coming back.  Jasper wants answers and will do anything to get them.

I thought this book was very good!  Jasper is a great character and believe me, you do not know what is going to happen until the end.  The writing is that good!  Must Read!

"Deeply Devoted" (Blue Willow Brides Series) by Maggie Brendan

Deeply Devoted (Blue Willow Brides) by Maggie Brendan is a light romance about a mail-order bride from Holland to a farmer in Wyoming in the 1800s. Catherine answers Peter’s ad for a bride and they correspond for six months but neither make mention of certain things. When Catherine arrives with her two teenage sisters, Greta and Anna, Peter is very surprised but accommodates them all nonetheless. Peter’s mother is shocked when she finds out he is marrying Catherine because he never mentioned anything about it to her. His mother is suspicious of Catherine so hires a private investigator to check out her background and uncovers a secret she neglected to tell Peter.

I enjoyed reading this light historical fiction romance. It’s about trust in a marriage and how important it is to be honest with your spouse. I liked the younger sister, Anna, best though and her puppies. It’s a quick read.

"Girl Waits With Gun" by Amy Stewart

Girl Waits With Gun by Amy Stewart is based on a true story.  Constance Kopp and her two sisters are riding in their buggy one day when they are run down by a ruthless factory owner.  When the girls want their money to repair the damages, the owner balks and gets his gang ready to terrorize the girls to keep them quite about the accident, or else!

This book kept my interest and the girls are really good, especially Constance, who is enlisted to help the sheriff in the case.

"Escape from Baxters' Barn" by Rebecca Bond - Cute Children's Book

Escape from Baxters’ Barn by Rebecca Bond is a children’s book that caught my attention because of the cover with the barn animals and a one-eyed cat. This is a cute story about how the farm animals, the barn cat and an owl work together to get away from the farm when the cat hears the farmer’s plan to burn down the barn! It is a cute fantasy story and I also liked the sketches throughout the book. The theme of the book is that everyone is important and working together results in success when everyone does their part. This is a very quick light read that I recommend to any animal lover.

"Ana of California" by Andi Teran is Heartwarming and Enjoyable! (Updated)

Ana of California by Andi Teran is the heartwarming story of Ana Cortez, an orphan who is approaching 16 and has been bounced around from foster home to foster home. She lives in L.A. where her father, mother and grandmother were shot by rival gang members. She finds herself in a new situation to avoid living in a group home, being a summer intern on Abbie and Emmett’s farm in northern California. When she is attracted to Cole, a boy everyone warns her to stay away from, she ignores their advice and they become friends.

I loved this story because Ana is such a likable character who tries to do the right thing but still ends up in bad situations. She always worries that Abbie and Emmett will send her back so tries very hard to work hard and please them. It shows how one person can make a difference and overcome one's past by moving forward. I loved how Ana found ways to use her artistic abilities too. I recommend this as a good beach read—very enjoyable!

Ana of California by Andi Teran is about a young teen girl named Ana. Ana is an orphan and has made the rounds of foster homes. Now she is down to her last chance. Make it work at this place—a farm or else she goes back to a group home. Can Ana do it? Can she make a go of it at the farm or not. I really liked this and cheered for Ana the whole way. I thought this book had enough action to keep my interest and is well worth reading. (5 stars)

"Wings of a Dream" by Anne Mateer

Wings of a Dream by Anne Mateer is about Rebekah, a young woman in Oklahoma who desires adventure and is determined to get out of the small town in which she lives with her mother and father.  She is a bit jealous of Will, her older brother who is a soldier during WW II because he gets to travel.  She is attracted to a pilot who she dreams of marrying one day.  When her aunt becomes ill and Rebekah goes to nurse her, she gets her adventure, just not the one she dreamed of.  She discovers her aunt was helping raise four little children while their widowed father served his country overseas. 

This is a good Christian historical fiction book that I enjoyed reading.  It is based on a real situation that actually happened and focuses on Rebekah’s search for God’s will for her life.  It is a clean romance that I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.

"Horse Camp" by Nicole Helget and Nate LeBoutillier

Horse Camp was not what I expected at all, but then that was the same way the twins in the book felt when they were sent to their Uncle's farm when their mom had to go to jail and their dad went off to start a new church.  Their mom called it "horse camp" to make it sound like fun, but it only had two old mean horses with mostly pigs and chickens.  This is simply a YA novel about getting along with people and not judging others.  The most exciting part for me was when the tornado hit and Percy and his friend took cover in a culvert.

I didn't care for this one much but it was a quick read so went ahead and finished it.  Basically Christians are portrayed in this book as hypocrites, self-righteous and judgmental.  I do not recommend this one.

"Burial Rites" by Hannah Kent is an Outstanding Read!

Burial Rites by Hannah Kent is an outstanding read based on a true story. Agnus was the last woman to be publicly beheaded in Iceland for murder.  While waiting her execution, she is at an isolated farm where the family avoids her.  Only a priest seeks to understand her. 

Even though I knew how it would end, it does not take away from the story.  Believe me, it doesn't!  This book pulled me in the first few pages and the characters in it are all really good.  I hear there is talk of a movie deal--if that is true, it would be a good one.

"The Ocean at the End of the Lane" by Neil Gaiman was Disappointing

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman (New York Times Bestselling Author), is about a man who comes back to his boyhood home and remembers the summer when he was seven when a girl befriended him.  It's a pretty good read with some good parts but also some parts that didn't interest me much.

"Anything You Ask" by Lynn Kellan is a Sweet Humorous Romance Novella

Anything You Ask by Lynn Kellan is a fast-moving romance about Dani, a widowed professor with two sons, who is left with a run-down farm and huge debts.  Facts about her late husband come out gradually when she turns to Hale, her brother-in-law for help with the farm.  He is more than willing to help her out because he secretly loved her all along so jumps at the chance to prove himself to her. 

I got into this book quickly and liked both the main characters so couldn't help but root for them to fall in love with each other.  The story line was unique and kept my interest.  I looked forward to seeing what would happen next!  It was over before I knew it but I liked that it didn't drag along at all.  I recommend it if you are looking for a light romance!
